India is suffering from massive levels of pollution and dust in the air, especially with the onset of winter. In a country whose capital city is currently seeing an AQI that would put the Paris Climate Agreement to shame, certain steps are to be taken. Especially considering the fact that the festival of lights is also the festival of not caring about the environment. In an attempt to reduce the effect of this damage on us at least inside our cars, certain carmakers are now introducing air purifiers as features in their newer offerings.
Hyundai i20 (Rs 6.80 lakh - Rs 11.18 lakh)
The third-generation i20 has seen significant changes in terms of design and interior quality. The cabin feels more premium than before thanks to the materials used and the updated feature list. The air in the cabin will also be cleaner thanks to the air purifier offered in the car’s Asta (O) (Rs 9.20 - Rs 11.18 lakh), Asta Turbo (Rs 9.90 - Rs 10.67 lakh) and Asta CVT (Rs 9.70 lakh) variants.
Hyundai Venue (Rs 6.75 lakh - Rs 11.65 lakh)
The first Hyundai-Kia pairing in this list comes from the sub-4m SUV category: the Venue. It is offered with a decent amount of features, including an air purifier in the SX (O) (Rs 10.85 - Rs 11.09 lakh) and SX+ DCT (Rs 11.36 - Rs 11.51 lakh) variants, and a bunch of powertrain options.
Kia Sonet (Rs 6.71 lakh - Rs 12.99 lakh)
Like it's Hyundai sibling, the recently launched Sonet too gets an extensive features list, and the same powertrain options (claimed to be more fuel efficient). Kia offers the Sonet with a factory-fitted air purifier just like the bigger Seltos, but only in the top-spec HTX+ (Rs 11.65 - Rs 11.75 lakh) and GTX+ (Rs 11.99 - Rs 12.99 lakh) variants.
Hyundai Creta (Rs 9.81 lakh - Rs 17.32 lakh)
Hyundai launched the second-generation Creta which not only looks good but also feels good, thanks to the creature comforts available on-board. The Creta is one of two SUVs in its segment, and price range, to come with an air purifier in the top-spec SX(O) (Rs 15.91 - Rs 17.32 lakh) and SX automatic (Rs 15.06 - Rs 16.11 lakh) variants.
Kia Seltos (Rs 9.89 lakh - Rs 17.34 lakh)
Kia’s compact SUV is offered at a great price. In comparison with its sibling, the Creta, it gets the same powertrain options and an air purifier but a more comprehensive list of features. The air purifier is available in the HTX (Rs 13.34 - Rs 14.44 lakh), HTX+ (Rs 15.49 - Rs 16.49 lakh), HTX Anniversary Edition (Rs 13.75 - Rs 14.85 lakh), GTX (Rs 15.54 lakh), and GTX+ (Rs 16.39 - Rs 17.34 lakh) variants as standard.
Yes, the Korean carmakers were the only ones to feature on this list. Yes, the cars they offer are affordable too. However, it's not like other carmakers aren't trying. Maruti Suzuki offers a PM 2.5 air filter for all its cars as an accessory. The MG ZS EV and Gloster also come with an air purifier, though they do not fit the “affordable” category of this list. The Nissan Magnite expected to launch on November 26, too will come with an air purifier.
