It made us sad to not see the Toyota Raize (also called the Rise) sub-compact SUV at the recent 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. However, we got a glimpse of what it could look like with Toyota sub-brand Daihatsu showcasing its sibling, the Rocky. But it seems like someone noticed our dismay as images of Toyota’s sub-compact SUV have just been leaked on the web ahead of its expected reveal in November. The Raize could be a strong answer from the Japanese auto major to the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300 for the Indian SUV segment. And the best part -- it already has a sub-4m length! But wait, it could also house a Suzuki powertrain here given the joint venture between Toyota and Suzuki. Hooked yet? Read on.
We already know that both the Raize and Rocky SUVs are based on the DN Trec Concept as well as built on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform. Compared to the Rocky, the Raize’s front-end has a more Toyota-like nose with features like a large trapezoidal grille with mesh inserts and a Toyota logo above the grille like the RAV4. It also gets horizontally placed DRLs compared to the vertical setup in the Rocky. Similarities at the front includes its headlamp design with higher variations likely to come in the higher trims judging from the leaked image. At the rear, expect a similar design to the Rocky with interconnected tail lamps.
While Toyota hasn’t revealed the dimensions of the Raize, it is expected to be similar to the Rocky at 980kg weight, 3995mm length, 1695mm width, and 1620mm height. It is also expected to share the Daihatsu’s 2525mm wheelbase. Since the two share the same platform, expect a similar cabin that consists of a clean design, silver inserts, a floating touchscreen and aircon vents that are slightly tilted towards the driver.
Under the hood, the Daihatsu Rocky is powered by a 996cc petrol engine that’s capable of delivering 98PS of power and 140Nm of torque, mated to a CVT transmission. Expect Toyota to share the same powertrain as well as offer an option of four-wheel-drive.
Since there is a joint venture between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki, it is likely that the India-spec Raize will be powered by the latter’s engine and take on rivals such as the Mahindra XUV300, Hyundai Venue, Ford EcoSport and the Tata Nexon.
