With the initiative of a voluntary recall campaign, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has issued the recall of 170 Prius Hybrid vehicles in India. Under this recall, inspection and installation of retention brackets on the curtain airbags inflators with be performed at authorised dealerships. The campaign has been started on June 29 all across the country and is a part of the global recall campaign of 1.43 million vehicles for defective airbags. The company has mentioned that the voluntary recall is not associated with the Takata airbags issue. The vehicles that were manufactured between November 2009 and April 2012 have been reported to be affected by the recall.

Toyota has reported that for some curtain airbag inflators there could be a possibility of a small crack in the weld which could lead to the separation of the inflator chambers. Due to this, the inflator could partially inflate and enter the vehicle interior, thereby increasing the risk of injury to the passenger.

"There are no reported failures of the affected part or any aggravations thereon in India till date. This voluntary recall campaign is being done by TKM in order to fulfil Toyota's commitment to customer satisfaction," said the company.

In the international market, the Japanese giant is recalling both the Prius Plug-in and Hybrid variants produced from 2010 to 2012 and the Lexus CT200h vehicles that have been manufactured between 2011 and 2012 for the same issue.
