For so long, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class has been the only option for those who want a luxury MPV in the Rs 80 lakh price range. Powered by a 2.1-litre BS6-compliant diesel engine, the V-Class is capable of seating up to six people in utmost luxury. However, the V-Class will soon have company in the form of the Toyota Vellfire. Toyota’s luxury MPV has been spotted in India and going by the registration plate, it seems that the Japanese manufacturer has been testing the MPV in Bengaluru. Select dealers across Bengaluru have even started accepting bookings for a token of Rs 5 lakh. The Vellfire will be brought into India as a CBU and is expected to receive a price tag of Rs 80 lakh (ex-showroom). Let’s see what the V-Class rival packs, shall we?
Visually, the Vellfire looks every bit an MPV thanks to its upright stance and proportions. It comes with a chrome-laden grille that merges onto the split LED headlamps. Below the grille lies a huge airdam that’s finished in black plastic trim. At the side, the Vellfire gets a relatively clean profile with no sharp creases or lines. At the rear, the MPV comes with funky LED tail lamps that are connected by a huge chrome strip. A roof-mounted spoiler tops the cake.
However, the Vellfire’s talking point has to be its interior, especially the rear section where it comes with power sliding doors and individual captain seats with tray tables for the second and third row. The middle row can be rotated to face the third row occupants for board meetings while there’s even a centrally-mounted roof TV that lets you watch your favourite movies while on the move. At the front, the Vellfire comes with a relatively straightforward dashboard with an easy-to-use layout.

Based on a leaked document, we know that the Vellfire will get features like a touchscreen infotainment system, dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charger, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof as well as cruise control. Safety features include seven airbags, ABS with EBD, parking sensors with rear view camera and electronic stability control.
The Vellfire will be powered by a 2.5-litre petrol-hybrid motor that develops a combined output of 180PS and 235Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via a CVT gearbox. This unit is expected to comply with upcoming BS6 emission norms as well.
Dealer sources have informed us that the Vellfire is expected to be launched in India by 2020. Going by their claims, we expect the Vellfire to hit our roads after February 2020.
