It looks like Toyota India is all set to launch the Vellfire in the country as it has been spied undisguised yet again at a dealership. The Vellfire is a luxury MPV that will rival the Mercedes-Benz V-Class, which recently got its top-end Elite variant in India. Bookings for the Vellfire are open at select Toyota dealers across Bengaluru, Karnataka, for a token amount of Rs 5 lakh. It will be brought to India via the CBU route and prices are expected to be around Rs 80 lakh (ex-showroom). The MPV will be available with a sole petrol-hybrid powertrain. Toyota is also planning some more practical vehicles for the coming year including a mid-size MPV smaller than the Innova and a compact SUV which was so far believed to the the Raize. Sadly the latter will remain a pipedream due to the Toyota-Maruti Suzuki tie-up.
The main highlight of the Vellfire is its rear seat experience. Open the electric sliding door and you’ll be welcomed by two individual captain seats that can put your couch at home to shame. These seats get heated and ventilated function, an electronically operated footrest as well as tray tables. The controls for these seat functions can be seen in the picture below.
The second-row seats can also be rotated to face the third-row occupants if you intend to have an important meeting. Other highlights include a centrally mounted entertainment system and a sunroof.
The Vellfire comes with a simple and minimalistic dashboard. The top part is draped in leather while there is generous use of wood, metal and piano black trims in the lower half.
Features onboard include dual-zone climate control, a touchscreen infotainment system, ambient lighting, cruise control, a wireless phone charger, powered tailgate, keyless entry with push-button start as well as powered front seats. It also comes with safety features such as seven airbags, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, a rear view camera, electronic stability control as well as an electric parking brake with auto hold function.
The Vellfire will come with a sole petrol-hybrid powertrain. This puts it at a slight disadvantage as the MPV segment is generally dominated by diesels. The motor on duty is a 2.5-litre petrol-hybrid that churns out 180PS of power and 235Nm of torque. It sends power to all four wheels via a CVT gearbox. It is likely to be a BS6-compliant unit.
The Vellfire is expected to be launched in India in early 2020. It is expected to be priced around Rs 80 lakh (ex-showroom). Its primary rival is the Mercedes-Benz V-Class, which starts from Rs 68.40 lakh (ex-showroom).
