1, Engine:
The biggest talking point about the new TVS Apache RTR 200 4V is its new powerplant which gets 4 valve technology. The new motorcycle has been offered in two variants – carburettor and fuel injection. In the carburetted version (Keihin CV) the Apache RTR 200 produces 20PS at 8,5000rpm and 18.1Nm of peak torque (identical on both the versions). The fuel injection (Bosch-closed loop) system has hiked the power output to 21PS at 8,500rpm. According to TVS they have launched two variants to satisfy the varying demands of consumers in the market. In reality, the carburetted version will be on sale till April 2017 before the stricter Bharat Stage 4 norms will be made mandatory which the fuel injected version meets. The Apache RTR 200 is also the first offering from TVS to employ oil-cooling technology while liquid-cooling was given a miss to keep cost low. Power is transmitted to the rear-wheel via a 5-speed gearbox.
2, Performance Figures:
According to TVS engineers the briefing given to them while designing the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V was that it has to be the quickest accelerating motorcycle in its segment to 60kmph. That’s the reason why there’s a larger sprocket at the rear, thus endowing the bike with faster performance off the block. But in this trade off, top speed had to be sacrificed a bit. The 0-60kmph timing for the Apache RTR 200 4V is 3.9 seconds which is impressive while the 100kmph mark is achieved in 12 seconds. Top speed of the fuel injected version is understandably higher at 129kmph while its carburetted variant has a maximum speed of 127kmph. The engineers have focussed on low-end torque to achieve brisk acceleration and we were able to ride the bike at 17kmph in 5th gear without the bike knocking which is noteworthy. Though a 6-speed gearbox would have felt more at home on the Apache RTR 200 4V and would have been really helpful on the highways.
3, No ABS:
TVS was first among the mainstream manufacturers in India to offer ABS as an optional extra with the Apache RTR 180. Given the fact that motorcycle enthusiasts in the country understand the importance of ABS, it comes as a surprise that ABS has been given a miss on the Apache RTR 200 4V. According to TVS personnel the ABS system is still undergoing its final stages of testing and would be made available by March 2016 at the earliest. The ABS system on the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V will be a dual channel system unlike the single channel (only front wheel) ABS as seen on the Bajaj Pulsar RS200.
4, Digital Console:
The TVS Apache RTR 200 4V is also the first bike from the stable of the Hosur based manufacturer to be equipped with an all-digital dash. The instrument console has a white light background colour similar to the RTR180. Standard features on the console include speedometer, trip meter, odometer, fuel gauge and clock. Additional details on the instrument cluster include gear position indicator, service indicator, reserve light and gear shift indicator. Other additional goodies includes lap timer and fastest speed recorder which makes the Apache RTR 200 stand apart from its rivals. Although, the bikes that we tested weren’t equipped with ABS, there’s also an ABS light on the console as it would be offered soon.
5, Tyre options:
Like the fuelling system, the TVS Apache RTR 200 V4 will also be offered with two tyre options – TVS Remora or Pirelli tyres. The TVS Remora will be standard fitment on the motorcycle given its lower pricing. The tyre size of the motorcycle is 90/90 R17 for front and 130/70 R17 for the rear. The Pirelli tyre options are Sport Demon range in the front and Pirelli Angel at the back. The Pirelli tyres definitely provide better grip than the TVS tyres and will be our pick for the marginal premium. But tyre life of Pirelli will be less than the TVS Remora’s, so if you want more durability and lesser grip then the Remora makes more sense, although we would still suggest to for the Italian tyre brand.
6, Monoshock suspension:
The Apache RTR 200 4V also has the distinction of being the first TVS offering to be equipped with a monoshock suspension. The Apache RTR180 used to get easily unsettled by a mid-corner bump or undulation as the chassis and the suspension package wasn’t stiff enough. To improve the handing dynamics of the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V a monoshock suspension setup has been employed while the double cradle chassis has been stiffened up. The monoshock unit has been sourced from KYB which is one of the most prominent suspension manufacturers globally.
7, Price & Variants:
At the launch there was much confusion about the price and the variants for the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V. In total, the new Apache RTR 200 4V will be offered in eight variants with the base price being announced as 88,990 (all prices are ex-showroom Delhi. Following are the complete variant list:
