Honda is a popular name in India when it comes to two-wheelers. The fact that the Honda Activa has been the top seller in the market is testament to the same. However, of late, Indian manufacturers have been going neck to neck with each other with competitive products and attractive offers. And TVS is certainly one of them. Its Apache range has been popular for quite some time, but it is the TVS Jupiter that, as a brand, has gained momentum in the market since the past few years.
By the month of September, it had successfully sold over 20 lakh units in all. Moreover, in the last month alone, it sold more than 90,000 units, breaking its own personal record. And now, it has successfully become the only scooter, besides the Honda Activa, to enter the list of 5 best-selling two-wheelers in India. The other three in this elite club are commuter motorcycles.
The Jupiter is fourth on the list with 93,573 units sold in October, compared to 60,943 sold last year in the same month. The Activa still rules the chart with 2,59,071 units sold in October, followed by the Hero Splendor and the Hero HF Deluxe. The Hero Passion rests fifth on the list, like last year, with 88,997 units sold last month.
The Jupiter has a 109cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine that makes 8PS of power at 7500rpm and 8Nm of torque at 5500rpm, mated to a CVT gearbox. Suspension is handled by telescopic forks up front and a monoshock unit at the rear. Both of its 12-inch wheels get drum brakes, but disc brakes are available as an optional extra. On the drum brake-equipped version, you get TVS’ Sync Braking technology which basically is a combined braking system. TVS claims a mileage of 62kmpl for the Jupiter. The scooter currently retails for a price of Rs 49,966 (ex-showroom Delhi).
TVS and the Jupiter have shown exceptional growth over the years. While its first 110cc scooter, the TVS Wego, didn’t fare as well, the Jupiter has proved to be a more formidable rival to the Honda Activa. When it comes to features, the Jupiter evenly matches the Activa and even edges past it in some aspects. The fact that it is a fairly competitive and value for money package has been the main contributor to its steady growth. Amongst all this, there is also a 125cc scooter and an electric scooter from TVS, which is expected to be showcased during the 2018 Auto Expo. We’ll keep you updated with all news on that end, so stay tuned to ZigWheels.
