The TVS Jupiter has been a great success for the Hosur based two-wheeler giant. In fact, the Jupiter has been able to establish TVS as among the prominent manufacturers in the Indian scooter segment and it also was the second highest selling scooter behind the Honda Activa. The Jupiter has also won all the recent 110cc comparison tests that we have carried out and it remains as our pick as the best 110cc scooter in the market. But despite all the accolades, TVS engineers don’t seem to be a satisfied bunch as a new variant of the TVS Jupiter was spotted testing.
According to reports, TVS will launch the disc brake version of the Jupiter soon. This really doesn’t come as a surprise as the TVS Wego also offers disc brake as an optional extra and the fact that both the scooters employ similar 12-inch dia wheels we are surprised by the delay for the disc brake TVS Jupiter. Another interesting addition to the popular scooter is fuel injection. The test mule Jupiter didn’t feature choke knob as seen on the standard variant signifying the fact that TVS is planning to add fuel injection system to the Jupiter. With emission norms set to become stringent in 2017, fuel injection can be seen as a move by TVS to make the Jupiter compliant to the new norms.
The TVS Jupiter is powered by a 109.7cc single cylinder, air-cooled motor producing 7.6PS of peak power and maximum torque of 8Nm, and has a claimed mileage of 62kmpl. We expect power figures to rise marginally owing to the new fuel injection system. Features on the TVS Jupiter include pass lights (segment first), external fuel filler cap at rear, 12-inch alloys wheels, tubeless tyres and LED tail light. Suspension duties are taken care of by telescopic front forks and gas-charged rear suspension. The TVS Jupiter also managed to notch up sales of over 5 lakh units within just 18 months of the scooter being launched. The base variant of the TVS Jupiter has been priced at Rs 48,489 ex-showroom Delhi and we can expect the fuel injection TVS Jupiter to be priced at a slight premium while the disc brake will cost an additional Rs 2,000 to 2,500 which we feel is well worth the premium. Expect the TVS Jupiter fuel injection variant to be launched by mid-2016.
