The new Volkswagen Passat's eco-friendly approach to mobility finds character in the form of the all new BlueMotion Technology that helps the sedan achieve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions without taking away any driving thrill

BlueMotion Technologies is a range of innovations and refinements that is finding its way into the entire range of Volkswagen cars, beginning with the all new Passat that has been recently launched in India. Working in close tandem with Volkswagen’s current line up of automobiles the newly incorporated BlueMotion Technology will make all future VW cars some of the cleanest, most energy efficient and fun to drive automobiles in the world.

BlueMotion Technologies debut in the all new Passat:

•    TDI Engine : A 2.0 L CR TDI engine with an output of 170 PS and torque of 350 NM @1750-2500 rpm offers abundant torque, outstanding power, while assuring low fuel consumption

•    Auto Start-Stop System: Whenever you stop at red light or in a traffic jam, the new Passat’s engine is automatically turned off when you take your foot off the clutch. And in case of the Dual Clutch Gearbox (DSG) Transmission, the same rule applies when you take your foot off the accelerator. Then when you depress the clutch again, (or the accelerator in the DSG ) the engine restarts automatically. This automated start-stop system, helps you save precious fuel and saves you the trouble of manually killing your engine when your car is frequently forced to idle.

Brake Energy Recuperation: Every time you brake, the kinetic energy is converted into electricity and stored in the battery. Which means, just the act of braking recharges the car’s battery. Now, the more you brake, the further your vehicle will travel.

•    Optimized gear ratios: Combines the comfort and convenience of an automatic transmission with the efficiency and performance of a manual gearbox. The Manual and the DSG Dual Clutch Gearbox  (DSG) transmissions are optimized for longer ratios, early up shifts and delayed downshifts for increased energy efficiency. Rapid and precise gear changes are the key advantages of this gearbox over automatic ones, besides ensuring higher fuel efficiency and reduction of carbon emissions. For those who still wish to change gears manually the triptronic shift function makes it possible too.

•    Gear Shift Indicator: This feature prevents energy loss while shifting gears. It does this by recommending the optimum time for you to shift a gear. This intelligent gear shift prompt system available in the manual transmission variant leads to significant reduction in the fuel consumption.

Volkswagen AG first introduced the BlueMotion badge to its Mk4 Polo in 2006, and since then has introduced this technology to its numerous production models like the Golf, Touran and the Passat. In April this year, Volkswagen’s BlueMotion product brand consisting of the Golf, Passat, and Polo, was declared the 2010 World Green Car of the Year by the World Car of The Year organization.

The Volkswagen BlueMotion models were awarded Green Car of The Year by 59 World Car jurors from 25 countries throughout the world.  The extensive panel of judges awarded the BlueMotion product brand over two other finalists in the 2010 World Green Car award: the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius.
