Tata Motors’ upcoming compact sedan, the Kite 5 (Update 9/02/2017: model now called Tata Tigor) has been spotted testing in India recently. It was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo earlier this year and its launch is expected in the upcoming festive season.

The Kite 5 is based on Tata Motors’ Tiago hatchback and is expected to be powered by the same engines as the Tiago. The diesel version of the Kite 5 will thus be powered by the 1.05-litre Revotorq unit which produces 70PS of power and 140Nm of torque. The petrol version will be powered by the 1.2-litre Revotron unit which produces 83PS of power along with 114Nm of torque. Both engines will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, though Tata Motors might launch an AMT equipped version later.

The Kite 5 measures just shy of 4 metres at 3995 millimetres and will have a wheelbase of 2.47 meters. The Kite 5 will share a lot on the inside with the Tiago as well, as the dashboard design will be identical to the hatchback. The Tiago has received positive reviews for its overall quality and we expect Tata Motors to carry the same forward with the Kite 5 too.

Tata Kite 5 Side Profile

The Kite 5 will be positioned below the Tata Zest in the company’s line-up and will be priced around the 5 lakh rupee mark. That said the Kite 5 does not have a direct rival since all sub 4-metre sedans on sale currently are more expensive. Chevrolet’s upcoming Beat Essentia could be its potential rival though.
