Back in September 2019, Volkswagen introduced the ID.3 electric hatchback, its first major offering in its push for electrification. Now, Volkswagen’s first model in the ID range has emerged as one of the safest hatchbacks around with a full five-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests.
The ID.3 scored 87 percent in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), 89 percent in Child Occupant Protection (COP), 88 percent in Safety Assists, and 71 percent in Automatic Emergency Braking against pedestrians. The report underlines the lane keeping assist and emergency braking assist functionality in the ID.3. The highlight, however, is the presence of a centre airbag for the front seats to help prevent possible head contact between the driver and front passenger in the event of a side collision.
Other safety highlights in the ID.3 include side head airbags for the front and rear passengers, ISOFIX mounts as well as seatbelt reminder and pretensioners. It also comes with autonomous driving safety assist features such as adaptive cruise control, travel assist, traffic jam assist, blindspot sensor with rear traffic alert, and park assist.
With this rating, Volkswagen continues its successful streak in the Euro NCAP crash tests -- last carried out on the new Golf hatchback and T-Cross. There’s no word on whether the ID.3 EV will make it to India. But with rival makers beginning to jump on the EV bandwagon and working on improving EV infrastructure, it may just be on the cards in the near future.
