According to a few reports, Volkswagen is currently testing the drivetrain and other mechanicals for its upcoming compact SUV which will be based on the Polo hatchback.
The test mule that you see in the pictures is not the actual SUV that will be put into production. The spotted car has the body shell of a Mk 7 VW Golf and a clear giveaway of what’s being tested is its high ground clearance. It will most likely be based on Volkswagen’s new-age MQB platform that is currently present underneath everything from the Skoda Octavia to the Volkswagen Tiguan.
Engine wise, we can expect Volkswagen’s tried and tested TDi diesel mill and the spied car was reportedly powered by VW’s 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol motor that churns out 110PS of power along with 175Nm of torque.
The compact SUV segment in India has seen a lot of growth recently and the German carmaker’s Polo-based compact SUV will compete with the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra NuvoSport and the TUV3OO. We can expect it to be feature-loaded just like its compact sedan sibling- Ameo, and will be most likely be showcased at the 2018 Indian Auto Expo.
Volkswagen will launch 10 new SUVs in the Chinese market by 2020 and it also showcased a plethora of SUVs like the T- Prime GTE and compact SUVs like the T-Cross recently at the Beijing Motor Show. Read more about it here.
