The Volkswagen Tiguan comes almost three years after the Touareg got the boot and will try to quench the growing thirst for SUVs among the Indian buyers.

Update: Volkswagen Tiguan SUV Launched At Rs 27.98 Lakh!

We first saw the 5-seater Tiguan at the 2016 Auto Expo while it was in its early concept stages. Now it's ready for primetime, and we're expecting to see the 2.0-litre TDI turbo diesel with 177PS of power and 350Nm of torque on tap, tomorrow. We may get a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox on the SUV delivering that torque to all four wheels for maximum traction. The SUV sits on Volkswagen Group's modular MQB architecture, which also underpins the Skoda Superb, Audi A3 and the upcoming Skoda Kodiaq.

The Tiguan will launch in two trims, Comfortline and Highline, with the higher variant packing all the goodies like reversing camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, puncture-resistant tyres, keyless entry, push-button start, panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting. Six airbags, ABS, rain-sensing wipers, LED headlamps, triple-zone climate control, power adjustable driver seat, electric tailgate with hands-free opening, cruise control, touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and parking sensors will remain standard on both variants.

Opting for a 5-seat cabin instead of squeezing the third row takes away a few potential customers but liberates more space for passengers and cargo. If the specs of the Tiguan revealed at various motor shows are anything to go by, then the Volkswagen's SUV could measure 4486mm with a wheelbase of 2681mm and a ground clearance of 190mm. The boot space of the Tiguan measures 615 litres with all seats up and 1655 litres with the seats folded down.

With the ex-showroom price hovering around the Rs 27 lakh mark, Tiguan's primary rivals will be Hyundai’s soft-roader Tucson. Overlapping price tags could also sway potential buyers of bulky ladder-frame SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and the recently-launched Isuzu mu-X in Volkswagen's favour. The price tag’s proximity with luxury offerings like the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA and BMW X1 might make buyers look at the Tiguan as a relative value-for-money offering.
