German carmaker Volkswagen is currently updating the four-cylinder 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine that is present in the Volkswagen Vento and Polo, and will also be seen in the upcoming Ameo compact sedan. Even the Skoda Rapid’s diesel variant is powered by the same engine.
Deliveries for the same 1.5-litre diesel engine with a manual gearbox were put on hold on by Volkswagen earlier this year in April and the company also recalled 3877 units of the manual diesel variant of the Vento due to inconsistent carbon monoxide emissions. The automatic DSG gearbox- equipped variants of the sedan were not affected by this.
The 1.5-litre TDI four-cylinder diesel engine was introduced by VW in 2014 and it replaced the three-cylinder 1.2-litre diesel engine that was present in the Polo and the four-cylinder 1.6-litre diesel engine that powered the Vento sedan.
The updated 1.5-litre unit will now produce 109PS of power instead of 104PS and is also expected to have slightly better fuel efficiency.
Volkswagen has also rolled out its much awaited compact sedan- Ameo, from its manufacturing facility in Chakan near Pune recently. Read more about it here.
The Ameo is based on the Polo platform and will also have similar engine options as the hatchback. Powering the diesel variants will be the 1.5-litre 4-cylinder TDI diesel engine while the petrol variants will draw their power from a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder MPI engine.
