Last year, we broke the news about Volkswagen working on a compact sedan for the Indian market. Since then test mules have been spotted, renderings have been going viral on the internet but there has been little news about its launch. The wait seems to be nearing the end now as Volkswagen says that the compact sedan based on the Vento ‘is not very far from production’. The car is expected to make its public debut in January 2016 while the prices are likely to be announced at the 2016 Auto Expo.
Needless to say, Volkswagen’s compact sedan will look identical to the Polo and the Vento. Based on the same platform, the compact sedan will sport the signature Volkswagen grille and will feature crisp styling that will make it look proportionate.
Under the hood, the Volkswagen’s sub-4 metre sedan will sport the 1.5-litre diesel mill to make the most out of the excise duty benefits. In this state of tune it will make 90PS/230Nm and comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The compact sedan is also expected to be launched in petrol with a 1.2-litre unit that produces 75PS and 110Nm.
While Volkswagen has consistently been making tank-like cars over the years, they have fallen back in regards to the features it has on offer. This time round with their new compact sedan, hopefully they should address the need. There is no confirmation about what Volkswagen will call their new sub-4 metre offering, but it has been rumoured in the past to be called the Polo Stuffe or Bora.
