Volvo To Use Recycled Plastic

Looks like Swedish manufacturer Volvo can’t put a foot wrong. They’re making some of the best looking cars, they’re among the best equipped, and considering it’s Volvo we’re talking about, they’re built to survive the apocalypse too. Their pledge of being kinder to the environment started off with their diesel engines being downsized, and we’re now seeing hybrid tech being part of every modern Volvo. Now though, they’re going beyond cleaner emissions to be green.

Volvo recently announced their plan of ensuring at least 25 per cent of the plastics in new cars will be made from recycled materials. To drive their point home, the manufacturer also showcased an XC60 that had several materials made from recycled plastic.

For example, the tunnel console was once old fishing nets and maritime ropes. The carpets are a combination of what were once PET plastic bottles paired with a cotton mix that clothing manufacturers usually discard. Then there are the seats that are also made from recycled plastic bottles. Volvo’s ensuring old Volvo cars contribute to this in their own way too. Old car seats were used as sound-deadening material under the bonnet. Sweet!

Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars, said “Volvo Cars is committed to minimising its global environmental footprint. Environmental care is one of Volvo’s core values and we will continue to find new ways to bring this into our business. This car and our recycled plastics ambition are further examples of that commitment.”

At a time where the biggest names in the automobile industry are coming under the scanner for fudging emission reports and being deceptive, Volvo’s initiative comes across as a breath of fresh air. While it remains to be seen if the manufacturer can actually pull this off (since a whole lot depends on their suppliers), we’ve got no reason to believe they can’t. If you needed another reason to love Volvo, there ya go!
