The Swedish carmaker is bringing its power-packed Polestar version of the S60 April 14, 2017. While the company has had the Polestar division for over two decades, we're only just getting the taste of Volvo's performance variants.
The carmaker is in the process of giving its entire lineup a thorough makeover. After the XC90 and the S90 the company has set its sights on the XC60, which was recently revealed at the Geneva Motor Show. The S60's next-gen model is still a long time away, and the Polestar should help rejuvenate the sedan's sales.
The S60 Polestar is based on the S60 T6, which has a 2.0-litre petrol engine with dual-forced induction. A turbocharger and a supercharger feed in the extra oxygen to help the regular S60 T6 pump out 306PS of power and 400Nm of torque. All the power and torque in the T6 goes to the front wheels, which limits its handling potential and results in a lot of torque steer.
The Polestar, with the same 2.0-litre motor and dual forced induction, makes 367PS of power and 467Nm of torque. Unlike the T6, the Polestar sends power to all four wheels, which maximises traction and helps it post an impressive 0-100kmph acceleration figure of 4.7 seconds. That's a saving of 1.2 seconds over the T6. The car can then go on to touch its electronically limited top speed of 250kmph. Its 20-inch Polestar-exclusive wheels wrapped in low profile rubber improve its handling characteristics as well as aesthetics. The Rebel Blue paint job is also only available with Polestar cars.
Other features will be similar to the regular S60 and the city safety feature will be a standout. The car uses sensors and applies brakes if it detects obstacles at city speeds. The feature works at speeds of up to 50kmph. Despite having all approval for the use of radar in cars, the premium suite of safety tech may not find a place in the Polestar. For now, the radar-based semi-autonomous driving kit is exclusively available with the XC90's T8 variant.
We’re expecting the Volvo S60 Polestar to cost between Rs 60-65 lakh. That puts it in the ring with the Mercedes-AMG C43 and the Audi S5, which carry a price tag of Rs 74.35 lakh and Rs 66.2 lakh, respectively.
