Without a doubt, the Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most iconic cars in the world. Not only does it hold the record for being the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single design platform anywhere in the world, it’s a shape that has been immortalized on the silver screen, making it something that will stay in our memories for a long time to come. So while Volkswagen was busy creating the 2012 version of the Beetle, an artist called Haribaabu Natesaan was busy recreating a life size Beetle art piece using nothing more than pieces of scrap metal – over 2805 pieces to be precise.
These included 800 spark plugs, 800 cold drink crowns, 200 bottle caps, 60 mother boards, Computer Key Boards, Hard Disks, CDs, audio cassettes, speakers, Barbecue Sticks, Beer cans, Telecom wires, Flat Screen Monitor, Pens, Type writers and much more scrap which you wouldn’t give a second glance to.
The scrap pieces used to build the car were collected from various environmental sustainability clean-up drives, called ‘Think Blue’, undertaken by Volkswagen at different locations. This masterful creation is on display at the Kala Ghoda festival at Mumbai from the 4th to 12th of February 2012. And once Indian audiences have had their chance to take in this ‘Scrap Beetle’, it will be sent to Germany to be put on display at an art museum over there.
