Looks like a presence in Formula 1 is taking too much juice out of Italian tyre maker Pirelli. Currently the regulation tyre supplier for the World Superbike Series with a contract until 2012, Pirelli seems to have expressed its lack of interest to continue its alliance with the FIM’s world-level production based motorcycle road racing series. Infront Motor Sports, the company that runs WSB, has begun to invite tenders from tyre makers to take on the mantle of being the racing rubber suppliers from the 2013 to 2015.
Pirelli has been the exclusive tyre partner for WSB since 2004, and this is the first time since then when the series has asked for tenders. This could be interpreted as a direct lack of a clear commitment from Pirelli for the future in the series, since WSB has in the past extended the tenure of the tyre maker without inviting applications from any other manufacturer.
Infront Motor Sports releases this interesting morsel through a statement on the official WSB website, which read, “The tender is open to qualified tyre manufacturers who can demonstrate top level international experience and know-how in the supply of racing tyres within the framework of professional motorcycling racing championships.” Looks like the scene may just be opening up for tyre makers from around the world to provide its rubber to some of the most powerful racing motorcycles in the world.
