Yamaha has well and truly upped its scooter game in recent times with the new Fascino 125 and the Ray-ZR 125, India’s first hybrid scooters. But now, it’s all set to make its mark in the more premium, 150-160cc scooter segment by launching the internationally acclaimed Yamaha Aerox 155 in India tomorrow.
This news comes a few months after Yamaha’s Aerox 155 launch plans were revealed thanks to leaked type-approval documents filed by the bikemaker.
As the suffix suggests, the Aerox is powered by the Yamaha R15 V3-sourced 155cc, VVA-equipped engine. It will, however, put out 14.95PS which may be about 4PS less than the R15 V3, but is still a good 4PS more than its chief rival, the Aprilia SXR 160.
Along with ample juice, the Aerox boasts a sporty and edgy design, and will be ripe with features like LED lights, a full digital LCD dash with smartphone connectivity, hazard lights, and a front disc brake.
The Yamaha Aerox 155 rides on 14-inch wheels, weighs 122kg, and has an accessible seat height of 790mm. These should contribute to making the maxi-style scooter fun to ride around. The fuel tank capacity is 5.5 litres. However, the Aerox 155’s fuel filler cap has a rather unique placement. Instead of behind or beside the seat, which we usually see on other scooters, the Aerox 155’s fuel filler cap is positioned on a central ridge on its floorboard.
From what we see so far, the Aerox 155 promises to be quite a path-breaking scooter. But the entire prospect could go sideways, though, if Yamaha doesn’t price it competitively. And this becomes even more crucial when you consider the type-approval documents mentioned that the engine maker is Yamaha Indonesia and not Yamaha India, suggesting it could be a CKD.
Nevertheless, we’re certainly excited to see what Yamaha’s new flagship scooter for India would be like. A fair price for the Yamaha Aerox 155 will be around Rs 1.40 lakh (ex-showroom), or about Rs 15,000-Rs 20,000 more than the Aprilia SXR 160.
