The updated model will only arrive in 2021
  • Globally, Yamaha updated the R3 this year.
  • Sadly, it was not updated to meet future emission norms.
  • Expect the new model to arrive with a sticker price of Rs 4 lakh (ex-showroom).
  • For those of you who were eagerly waiting to put their money down for the updated Yamaha R3, there is some bad news for you. There are no plans of bringing the updated R3 to our shores anytime soon as the bike is not yet Euro 5-/BS6-compliant. The earliest that we can see the bike on our roads again is 2021.

Earlier this year, Yamaha updated the R3 with new suspension components and a new look inspired from the current-gen R15. One of our qualms with the R3 that is currently being sold in India are the softly-sprung suspension units. The new Kayaba units are said to be tuned to offer a more sporty experience.

Sadly, Yamaha did not give the 321cc parallel-twin motor any updates. It continues to pump out 42PS and 29.6Nm, while remaining Euro 4-/BS4-compliant. In Europe, existing motorcycle models have received an extension until 2021 to meet the Euro 5 emission norms. Hence, Yamaha has not tinkered around with the engine just yet. And it is highly unlikely that Yamaha India will just update the motor to meet the BS6 norms, especially for a low-volume product.

We can only see Yamaha India introducing the updated R3 in 2021. We’ll have to wait and watch to see if the India-spec model will receive some form of cost-cutting or retain the fancy new suspension components. If Yamaha does bring the same spec R3 as the one it sells abroad, expect its price tag to soar to around Rs 4 lakh (ex-showroom India).
