India Yamaha Motor launched its stylish new scooter Ray in Hyderabad today at a price of Rs 46,000 ex-showroom, Delhi. Ray is the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer’s first model to enter the Indian scooter segment. The company intends to expand its market share to 20 per cent with the addition of this new scooter in its portfolio.
While Honda, Suzuki and TVS have already made their mark in the scooter segment, Yamaha was expected to make its entry soon. The company first unveiled the Ray at the 11th Auto Expo in Delhi earlier this year. The company’s decision to enter this segment came as a derivation of the huge demand for products in the segment.
Yamaha’s first offering in the segment is powered by a 4-stroke 113cc engine with Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) that produces 7.1PS @ 7500rpm and a torque of 8.1Nm @ 5000rpm. Aimed specially at the fairer sex, the Ray looks young and has a seat that is specially designed keeping in mind easy leg reach. The Yamaha Ray will be offered in six colours: Pink, Purple, Blue, Burgundy, Grey and Black.
Speaking on the occasion Hiroyuki Suzuki, CEO and MD of India Yamaha Motor said, “I am positive that we can get a strong presence soon in the Indian scooter market. Our dealers in India are dedicated to improving their facilities and services for scooter sales. We have expanded our dealer network and specially improved customer care and quality for female customers by appointing more female staff at customer contact points and introducing female customer care programs.”
Yamaha also intends to set up a new factory from January 2012, and with the expansion in production capacity, the company intends to achieve 1 million unit sales in 2014. Also Read: Yamaha Ray clocks 5,000 bookings
The Ray follows a series of launches that have already happened in this year including the Piaggio Vespa, Suzuki Swish, Honda Dio, and Mahindra Rodeo RZ. The big question remains will Yamaha’s new offering be able to deter its compatriot from the market leader throne, only time can tell.
