MG recently released a model year update for the Astor, offering a handful of additional standard features to its variants but its design or interior did not get a nip and tuck. There are no new feature additions. The Astor falls under one of the most lucrative and ultra-competitive market segments, where a wide range of SUVs stack up against each other, including the Volkswagen Taigun. And we are going to compare both the SUVs to find out which offers the best overall package on paper.
Meanwhile, it must be noted that Morris Garages has already unveiled the new generation ZS HEV (commonly known as the Astor in India), featuring a new-look design, a completely revamped interior, and a new strong hybrid powertrain. Although the new SUV was showcased at the Auto Expo 2025, it will be hard to say when it will come to India.

Rs 10.90 lakh to Rs 18.69 lakh |
As mentioned in the table, the 2025 MG Astor is priced significantly lower than the top-spec Volkswagen Taigun thanks to the discontinued 1.3-litre turbo-petrol variants. However, there is a considerable difference between the two when it comes to the starting price. Despite this difference, the entry-level variant of the Taigun offers more safety features as standard compared to the Astor, including six airbags.

The 2025 Astor offers a wide range of modern-day features and safety equipment over the Taigun. Notable features include a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, electronic parking brake with auto-hold, hill descent control, and ADAS. On the flip side, the Taigun front-powered seats, paddle shifters, 6 airbags as standard, and multi-collision braking over the Astor. While the panoramic sunroof may not be a deal-breaker for every buyer, a 360-degree camera and electronic parking brake with auto-hold can be appealing and useful tech for daily driving.

With the model year update, the 2025 Astor is no longer available with the 140 PS 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine. It now comes with only the 1.5-litre NA petrol motor instead. Given its nature, the power and torque output are lower than the 1-litre turbo-petrol engine of the Taigun. Speaking of which, the Volkswagen also offers the SUV with a 150 PS 1.5-litre TSI Evo engine. On the other hand, the Astor gets a 5-speed manual gearbox unlike its counterpart with a 6-speed manual unit across the board.
Although the MG Astor offers more features its sales have been sluggish but the most recent update might turn the situation around. The Taigun has been doing decently in terms of sales. On the other hand, both models have started showing their age and hence need a redesign or feature updates.
If you are in the market for a new sub-compact SUV, then which one would you pick? The Astor or the Taigun? Let us know in the comments below.
