Hero has equipped the BS6 model with a host of upgrades and here’s how it is different from the BS4-compliant motorcycle

Among a number of new product launches and unveils at the Hero World 2020 event, Hero MotoCorp also introduced the Passion Pro BS6 yesterday. The motorcycle is almost Rs 8000 more than the BS4 model. Hero has justified the premium with a number of new features and mechanical enhancements. Here’s how it differs from the BS4-compliant model:

All prices are ex-showroom Delhi. Hero has already started shipping the bike to its dealerships, so expect the deliveries to commence pretty soon. For such a nominal amount, the brand has offered not only a new fuel-injected engine but also a new chassis among other things. More on them in the forthcoming paragraphs.

Frugal powertrain:

Hero has slightly reduced the peak power in favour of cleaner emissions. But on the flip side, the brand has increased the peak torque by 0.79Nm. It also arrives at 500rpm earlier. This ensures brisk acceleration in the city, at least theoritically. Torque nature is crucial in a commuter motorcycle as most of its usage is restricted within the city, on traffic-riddled roads. Moreover, Hero also claims the fuel-injected engine is 5 per cent more efficient than the carburetted one. Both bikes get i3S feature but additionally, the BS6-compliant Passion Pro features Auto Sail technology, which is also found in the more expensive newly launched Glamour 125 FI BS6.

Better underpinnings:

Both bikes get the same type of suspension: front telescopic fork and twin rear shock absorbers. However, the BS6 Hero Passion Pro features a new diamond type frame whereas the BS4 Hero Passion Pro is built on a double cradle frame. Thanks to the new frame, Hero has been able to ensure a 14 per cent more suspension travel up front (now 120mm) and an extra 10 per cent at the rear in the BS6 bike.

Consequently, the ground clearance has gone from 165mm in the BS4 Passion Pro to 180mm in the BS6 model. That translates to a 9 per cent increase. The greater ground clearance should help in going over some of our notoriously bad roads rather effortlessly. Even the wheelbase has been increased by 25mm, at 1270mm in the BS6 bike. This should ensure better straightline stability.

For added braking prowess, the BS6 model now gets a front 240mm disc as a variant. The rear continues with a drum setup in both BS4 and BS6 bikes. Of course, CBS is standard in both the motorcycles.

Verdict:

DD5A

The Hero Passion Pro BS6 seems to be a much better package overall. It gets all the necessary enhancements (better torque, more ground clearance and suspension travel) which will make a positive difference out in the real world. Additionally, the bike also gets extra nifty features like the crawl function (Auto Sail Technology) and a real-time mileage indicator in the semi-digital instrument cluster.

But if you’re under a very strict budget, then the BS4 Passion Pro will do just fine. Moreover, there are chances of getting discounts by select dealers as a part of stock clearance as the BS4-compliant bike can’t be sold from April 1 2020 onwards.
