Can the third-gen Grand i10 Nios do what the Venue did against the Vitara Brezza and finally dethrone the Swift? We pit them against each other to find out.

While the Hyundai i10 hatchback has been one of Hyundai’s best selling hatchbacks, it has always been trumped by Maruti’s top dog hatchback, the Swift. The Swift was bigger, longer and had a lot more cabin space. Hyundai is looking to finally overcome these disadvantages with the recently launched Grand i10 Nios. This third-generation of the i10 hatchback is not only bigger but better equipped to take on the Swift. But is that really the case? Let’s find out.

The Grand i10 Nios has seen a definite increase in proportions compared to its previous iteration. While the Nios is longer by 40mm, wider by 20mm and has had its wheelbase extended by 25m, the Swift still holds an advantage by being wider, taller and providing more boot space. Interestingly, the two hatchbacks are now equally matched when it comes to the wheelbase.

The Grand i10 Nios retains the same set of petrol and diesel engines as the Grand i10. Compared to the Swift, the Nios gets a little more torque at 114Nm but has the same power output. Both petrol hatchbacks are also BS6 compliant. However, the Swift edges the other out with better fuel efficiency.

The similarities continue with the diesel motors, however neither of them are BS6 compliant. The Swift once again takes the upper hand in fuel efficiency. Both hatchbacks also get a manual and an AMT gearbox option to play with.

Features:

In their entry-spec trims, both hatchbacks get many common features like body-coloured bumpers, manual AC, front power windows, 12V power outlet, driver and passenger seatbelt reminder, electric and power steering. But the Swift edges out the i10 with additional features like LED taillamps, tilt steering and roof antenna.

Going towards higher end variants, both hatchbacks get creature comforts like follow-me-home headlamps, speed-sensing auto door lock, steering-mounted audio controls and height-adjustable driver’s seat. They also feature a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity with the Nios getting a bigger screen (8-inch) compared to the Swift (7-inch).

The Swift gets certain additions like leather-wrapped steering wheel, outside temperature display, driver-side foot rest, 60:40 split rear seat and LED auto headlamps. The Grand i10 Nios on the other hand gets premiums like rear AC vents, front projector fog lamps, roof rails, shark fin antenna, 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster, cooled glovebox, chrome on door handles and wireless phone charging. The Nios unfortunately misses out on the Blue Link connected car tech from the Venue, which could have been a major game changer against the Swift.

Safety:

Both hatchbacks receive safety equipment like rear parking sensors, dual front airbags, front seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters, ABS with EBD, and speed alert system. However, the Swift edges out with the presence of ISOFIX child seat anchors.

Price & Final Verdict:

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Price (ex-showroom)

Rs 5.00 lakh to Rs 7.99 lakh

Rs 5.14 lakh to Rs 8.89 lakh

If you are looking for a hatchback with more options, better fuel efficiency and safety, the Maruti Suzuki Swift is still the ideal pick. However, its price jump per variant isn’t justifiable. The Grand i10 Nios being fresher and with more premium features is more of a value for money hatchback.
