Mahindra recently launched the 5-door Thar Roxx which is essentially the elongated version of the Thar 3-door with an extra set of doors, an upgraded cabin with plenty of premium features and more potent engine options. The pricing of the new Thar Roxx is eligible for comparison with the compact SUVs as well as some mid-size SUVs. In this article we will be comparing it with the Tata Safari to find out which SUV offers more value in terms of size, features, engine options and pricing.
Let the match begin:

As seen in the table above, the Thar Roxx is around Rs 2.5 lakh more affordable if you are considering the base variant of these two SUVs, and that difference stretches to around Rs 7 lakh for the top-spec variant.
It is important to note that the Thar Roxx pricing is introductory and prices for the four-wheel drive variants are yet to be announced. The 4x4 variants of the Thar Roxx will be priced at a premium and the gap between the top-end versions of both models will be reduced.

Both SUVs are for those who like SUVs with large dimensions. While there are compromises on either side based on different parameters, road presence is definitely not something that you will have to compromise on, irrespective of which SUV you choose.

The Thar Roxx gets both petrol and diesel engine options, but the Safari can only be had with a sole diesel engine.
Comparing the diesel engines, the Thar Roxx makes 18 PS/ 20 Nm lesser output with the rear-wheel drive version, but makes 5 PS and 20 Nm more with the four-wheel drive automatic model.
The Thar Roxx’s petrol engine churns out the most power and torque overall, with its automatic transmission.
The Thar Roxx is available with both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive options, while the Safari is only available in front-wheel drivetrain.
The Mahindra Thar Roxx and Tata Safari are both SUVs that are bought for different purposes and needs. However, both these SUVs are well-equipped with a comparable features list and potent powertrain options. Both SUVs are also very eye-catching thanks to their attractive design.
The Thar Roxx is for someone who wants an SUV that makes a bold statement while having premium features and rugged looks as opposed to conventionally styled midsize SUVs. It is more of a lifestyle choice, which will give you a sense of occasion every time you step inside. However, we suggest you take a long test drive over different types of roads as the Thar Roxx’s ride is stiff and still bounces around, which might make rear seat occupants feel uncomfortable.
The Tata Safari is a more family-friendly SUV and also feels more sophisticated. Its modern styling and large dimensions make it stand out on the road. It won’t be as capable as the Thar Roxx off-road, but does a great job over paved city or highway roads providing a much superior experience in terms of overall comfort. If you have a larger family, and won’t ever really go off-road, then the Safari should be considered as it offers both 6- and 7-seater configurations and a more comfortable overall package.
So, the final decision depends on your needs and requirements. Let us know what your thoughts are about these two SUVs in the comments below.
