Royal Enfield recently launched the Scram 440 in India. One of its direct rivals is the Yezdi Scrambler. Both of these motorcycles are priced similarly and both offer almost similar features to the customer. Let's see how these motorcycles compete against each other.
In terms of design the Royal Enfield Scram 440 takes its inspiration from the previous gen Himalayan 411. The design for the Scram 440 is rather basic and looks soothing to the eyes with its smooth lines and well proportionate body panels. Royal Enfield has given the Scram 440 some beautiful paint schemes to help the motorcycle enhance its rugged look.
The Yezdi Scrambler gets a front beak, a well sculpted metal tank and a narrow tail section, all of which help it look like a conventional scrambler. Some could even find the design for the seat a bit different but it gets the job done. Overall the Yezdi does look good with its custom motorcycle type design.
The Royal Enfield Scram 440 gets a 443cc air and oil-cooled single-cylinder engine that puts out 25.42PS at 6,250rpm and 35Nm at 4,000rpm. The Scram 440 gets a 6-speed gearbox which should help it put down all its power to the ground more efficiently.
The Yezdi Scrambler gets a 334cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine that makes 29.7PS at 8,000rpm and 28.22Nm at 6,750rpm. The engine on the Yezdi makes its peak power and torque higher in the rev range when compared to the Scram 440. So, although the Yezdi makes more power, in day-to-day usage, the Scram 440 could feel a bit more effortless in riding.
The Royal Enfield Scram 440 gets a seat height of 795mm. It also gets a 41mm telescopic fork with 190mm of travel and a rear monoshock with 180mm of travel. For braking duties, the Scram 440 gets a 300mm front disc with a twin-piston caliper and a 240mm rear disc with a single piston caliper. The Scram 440 offers a 19-inch front and a 17-inch rear wheel setup with both spoke and alloy wheels as an option. The Scram 440 has a kerb weight of 196kg.
The Yezdi Scrambler gets a seat height of 800mm. It also gets a 41mm telescopic fork but with a modest 150mm of travel and twin adjustable gas-charged rear shocks with 130mm of travel. Braking duties are handled by a 320mm front disc with a twin piston caliper and a 240mm rear disc with a single piston caliper. The Yezdi Scrambler also gets a 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel setup but with only spoke wheels on offer. The Scrambler has a kerb weight of 182kg making it significantly lighter than the Scram 440.
Both of these motorcycles offer dual-channel ABS but the Yezdi also gets ABS modes.
The Scram 440 gets a semi-digital instrument console which shows all the basic info like speed, fuel level, engine temperature, trip info, service indicator, gear position indicator, time, and an ECO mode indicator. Customers can also opt for the optional Tripper navigation display for the Scram 440 which comes with additional features like smartphone connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation and SMS/call alerts. The Scram 440 now also offers switchable ABS which will make it more capable off-road.
The Yezdi Scrambler gets a digital instrument console which shows speed, engine RPMs, fuel level, engine temperature, trip info, service reminder, time, gear position indicator, and ABS modes. There's no smartphone connectivity on offer for the Yezdi Scrambler. However, the Yezdi gets three ABS modes to boast about: Road, Rain and Off-Road.
The Royal Enfield Scram 440 is priced at Rs 2,08,000 while the Yezdi Scrambler costs Rs 2,11,900 (both prices ex-showroom). There's not a significant difference in the pricing of these motorcycles, but both offer different sets of features and hardware which will be appreciated by customers of different mindsets.
The Scram 440 may be less powerful, but Royal Enfield’s vast service network makes it a safer option to get. Yezdi, on the other hand, is still trying to expand their service network across India. However, the striking design language and more powerful liquid-cooled engine makes the Yezdi quite hard to resist.
