After years of toying with the idea of bringing a big scooter with the Yamaha R15’s mill, we finally have some good news. Yes, there is a 155cc scooter coming from the Iwata manufacturer. However, unlike previous speculations, it is going to be the sporty Aerox 155 that will grace our shores and not the NMax 155.
The Aerox 155 is built on the same platform as the NMax 155. It bears the same 155cc single-cylinder 4-valve liquid-cooled engine as the R15 V3 and MT-15. However, the engine tune will be different from its motorcycle siblings. The motor on the India-spec Aerox will put out 14.95PS. That’s a little under 4PS less than the R15 and just a smidge less than the Indonesian Aerox. The difference between the Indian and international model can be attributed to the stringent BS6 emission norms that the motor will have to adhere to.
Nevertheless, the arrival of the Aerox 155 is one that bodes well for budding enthusiasts. It is quite a popular scooter in the Southeast Asian market as it looks extremely sharp and race-ready. There’s a full digital LCD dash with a smartphone connectivity module present on the Aerox as well as an LED headlight and taillight.
The Aerox 155’s suspension setup comprises a telescopic fork and twin rear shocks. A front disc/rear drum brake setup is standard with the Aerox 155 running on larger 14-inch wheels. This should make the scooter extremely lively and zippy.
Yamaha will have to ace the pricing of the Aerox 155. In the document, it is mentioned that the engine maker is Yamaha Indonesia and not Yamaha India, suggesting that the motor for the Aerox will not be built here. This could drive up the asking price of the scooter and hence, we estimate it to carry a price tag of around Rs 1.25 lakh (ex-showroom). That would make it pricier than its chief rival, the Aprilia SR160. However, the Aerox 155 will have better performance, a well tuned suspension setup and more features to justify the extra asking price.
