The Exter will be the Korean carmaker’s entry-level SUV and will go head-on against the Tata Punch

  • Hyundai Exter SUV spotted undisguised in South Korea.
  • Gets a boxy silhouette with plenty of funky design touches.
  • Should get a large touchscreen, sunroof and a wireless phone charger.
  • Expected to get 1.2-litre petrol and 1-litre turbo-petrol engine options.
  • Launch expected soon.

The Hyundai Exter micro SUV has been spotted completely undisguised ahead of its imminent global debut in South Korea. The Tata Punch-rivalling SUV will be the next big launch from Hyundai in India and the Korean marque recently teased the SUV’s front fascia via a design sketch. And the good news is that the production-spec model looks largely true to the design sketch.

The Exter’s design is full of boxy and squarish-elements that give the model a nice SUV-like vibe. Up front, the upright fascia houses a set of DRLs with the ‘H’ insignia, below which sits a large rectangular grille and headlamps. Looks really cool, according to this author.

In profile, it gets a rather boxy silhouette with a steeply raked A-pillar. Unlike recent day Hyundais like the Tucson and Verna, the side profile of the Exter is clean and has smooth lines. However, the flared wheel arches with body cladding give it a nice and beefy stance. Topping up the cake are the connected LED tail lamps with ‘H’ insignia.

The Exter’s interior is yet to be snapped. But like other Hyundais, we suspect it will get loads of features, including a large infotainment system, digital driver’s display, wireless phone charger, a sunroof, automatic climate control and cruise control. Safety kit should consist of up to six airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors with camera and electronic stability control.

The Exter should get the Grand i10 Nios’ 83PS 1.2-litre petrol engine, paired to either a 5-speed manual or AMT. Post its launch, the micro SUV could get a CNG option as well. And we wouldn’t discount the 1-litre turbo-petrol engine to likely make its presence in the Exter as well.

We expect Hyundai to take the wraps off the Exter in India real soon. And it could be priced in our markets from around the Rs 6 lakh mark (ex-showroom). The Hyundai Exter will go up against the Tata Punch and Maruti Suzuki Ignis in India.
