[Update: Royal Enfield has launched the Meteor 350 in India. For pricing and other information from the launch, head here]
It’s been a slow burn so far but now things are really clicking into top gear as far as the launch of the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 is concerned. After brochure leaks last month showed us the 3 variants and 7 colour options that will be offered, fresh brochure images now give us information about the Meteor’s specifications.
Most importantly, the upcoming bike’s power and torque figures have been revealed! So here goes: 20.1HP (20.48PS) and 27Nm. Disappointed? So are we. Taking into account the J platform’s modern SOHC architecture compared to the UCE motor’s ancient pushrod technology, we were hoping for slightly higher output figures. But instead, the Meteor will only pack 1.12PS more than the BS6-compliant 346cc UCE engine currently powering the Classic 350 and Bullet 350. And torque will actually be 1Nm less!
On the face of it, this does seem disappointing. But the Meteor isn’t going to be a performance-oriented motorcycle, and our complaints about the current UCE motor don’t pertain to power and torque either. Its biggest Achilles heel is the appalling refinement levels that make it impossible to sustain high speeds for long durations without your palms going numb. The more sophisticated and modern J platform motor is almost certainly going to be far less vibey while still retaining the characteristic thump. It’s also quite likely that the new engine will be more fuel-efficient than the current UCE, thanks to its more modern design, and that’s something that all Indian buyers will appreciate.
If you’re still disappointed by the somewhat mediocre output figures, we might have an antidote for you. Because a few pages further down the brochure, there are some tasty details about all the Meteor’s features! Does it get Bluetooth connectivity? LED lights? Find out tomorrow right here on ZigWheels…
