The Tesla Model Y has been spotted sans camouflage at a public charging station in the suburbs of Mumbai. While Tesla’s entry into India remains uncertain even now, we still believe the carmaker could start its India ops by offering its initial batch of vehicles as completely built units (CBU). The Model 3 is expected to be the debut model, while the Model Y could be on cards.
The Model Y is Tesla’s entry-level SUV that sits below the Model X in the carmaker’s SUV lineup. In the US, there are two types available depending on your preference: Long Range (7-seater) and Performance (5-seater). There is no mention of the power or battery in Tesla’s official websites, but the Performance trim has enough oomph to keep up with a Lamborghini!
Take a look at the detailed specifications:
Tesla Model Y Long Range |
Tesla Model Y Performance |
|
Range (EPA estimated) |
531km |
487km |
0-96kmph |
4.8 seconds |
3.5 seconds |
Top Speed |
217kmph |
249kmph |
Fun Fact: Tesla’s superchargers can juice the Model Y’s battery to deliver a range of 260km in just 15 minutes.
The test mule is a Right-hand Drive (RHD) model and was seen with a black cabin with wooden inserts. Its 15-inch landscape-oriented touchscreen infotainment system, which gets Over-The-Air (OTA) functionality, eliminates the need for buttons and knobs as almost all of the vehicle’s functionality, including its Autopilot system can be controlled through the screen.
When it comes to design, the Model Y seems like a beefed up Model 3 as the headlamps, tail lamps, and the silhouette is quite similar to the sedan. Not a bad thing, though, as the crossover does tend to stand out and look futuristic.
Tesla has homologated three more models in India, taking the total to seven. But it still remains to be seen when the carmaker plans to start its India ops. When the Model Y comes to India, we expect prices to start around Rs 1 crore, putting it in contention with the Audi e-tron, Mercedes-Benz EQC, Jaguar I-Pace, and BMW iX.
