Motorcycles are being updated every year with new tech and this time around it's the Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro which gets a bunch of updates for 2024 to further enhance its on and off-road capabilities. We spent a week with the motorcycle to bring you a detailed review.
Design
The Tiger 900 Rally Pro has always been a sharp and good-looking motorcycle so there weren't many changes needed in this department. For 2024, the bike has the same silhouette with minor differences to some of the panels at the front. Realistically, one would only be able to tell the difference if they were looking at the older model alongside this one. There are also new colour schemes to choose from including Carbon & Sapphire Black, Ash Grey & Intense Orange, and Matt Khaki Green & Phantom Black.
Performance
The 888cc, inline triple-cylinder engine has an increased compression ratio, new parts and delivers more power compared to the older model. It now puts out 108PS and 90Nm, which is 13PS and 3Nm more than before. This engine has a raw nature and it is a lot of fun to wring out on any terrain. It has a potent low-end, very usable mid-range, and an addictive pull as it rushes to the redline. Compared to before, even less effort is required as this model has much better low-end grunt, making those tricky off-road trails a walk in the park. Out on the highway, it's a proper mile muncher, easily able to sit at speeds over 120kmph and it is also quite tractable, able to do around 60kmph in sixth gear. The quickshifter on this Rally Pro is another thing that makes the ride experience effortless along with the light clutch action.
There are a total of six riding modes to better suit each type of terrain but the Off-Road Pro mode is where the fun really is at. For an experienced rider, this mode gives you full control of all the power and it allows you to disable Traction Control and ABS for a seamless experience. The electronics have been fine-tuned compared to before and do a fairly decent job to keep things safe for the average rider. Although, an experienced rider might find the TC a bit too intrusive at times and will surely appreciate having full control of the bike.
Putting the bike into Off-Road Pro mode really brings out the raw nature of the Tiger as it is ready to slide, pop wheelies, and be a wild hooligan. To sum it up, the engine in the Tiger 900 Rally Pro is a beast and a great all-rounder with how it manages to perform well in any given situation, on and off the road. Triumph also claims that the bike now delivers a 9% better fuel efficiency and that should allow the bike to do around 480kms on a full tank of fuel.
Ergonomics
the automobile community
The Tiger 900 Rally Pro is a tall motorcycle but riders can now slightly adjust the seat depending on their preference. The adjustment is between 860mm & 880mm, which is still tall, but it is a really well balanced motorcycle and that means as soon as you get going, it feels extremely lightweight and easy to maneuver. Even though this is a 228kg motorcycle, it is also surprisingly easy to move around at a standstill, which helps in removing it from tight parking spaces.
For 2024, the bike also gets a dampened handlebar to reduce vibrations. With the slim profile of the motorcycle in the middle section, it is easy to get astride and overall, a rider is placed in a really commanding position which makes it a comfortable position for touring, cornering, or standing up on the pegs and tackling off-road trails. The only time a rider might face a bit of discomfort is if they are in stop-go traffic as the bike does heat up quite a bit.
Handling & Ride Quality
With a 21-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear wheel, the Rally Pro is ready for anything in its path. The ride quality is extremely plush and for 2024, the bike gets manually-adjustable preload, rebound and compression damping at the front, and preload and rebound damping at the rear. Riders can set this up to their liking for a more comfortable ride, depending on their weight. The bike is planted and predictable going into corners and easily changes direction with good leverage from the wide bars. Even over unpredictable off-road sections, it feels light, easy to control and has a lot of power on tap to get you out of sticky situations and feels confidence inspiring.
Another update is the use of Brembo Sytlema Calipers which give the bike a really sharp braking feel. With the ABS on, there were times where the lever did pull back when I was trying to engage hard and fast in an emergency, but it still came to halt on time. As mentioned earlier, you have the option to completely disengage ABS, which gives you full control for off-roading. The tyres are also really grippy and strike a great balance between on and off-road riding. Throughout my time spent with the bike, I did have some slippery moments and the tyres always had my back. Proper knobbies would obviously be preferred if the bike is going to spend all its time off-road.
Features
One of the main updates to the 2024 model is the addition of the 7inch TFT screen which was introduced on the Tiger 1200. This screen is large, displays a ton of information and is extremely easy to read. Controlling the functions on screen is also easy via the switchgear but there is just one issue with this unit. It is not the most refined as it is quite laggy, first while starting up and then while navigating through menus. The bike also gets a USB charging port, and Bluetooth Connectivity for Turn-By-Turn Navigation, call and SMS alerts, and more.
To get into the Off-Road and Off-Road Pro modes, the ignition has to be switched off and restarted. After using the bike in either of these modes and then restarting it, a rider will get a notification asking if they would like to keep their previous settings so one doesn't have to go through the entire process again.
Verdict
The Tiger 900 Rally Pro is priced between Rs 15.95 lakh to Rs 16.25 lakh (ex-showroom prices) depending on the colour option you pick. This is premium and expensive, but a motorcycle that you can properly use for touring through the unknown. I remember doing a round trip of approximately 1000kms with the older model and it was surprising how effortless it felt to cover that distance. What I really love about the updated Tiger 900 is its raw nature, paired with its ability to feel lightweight and have insane on and off-road abilities. At times, I forgot I was riding a 228kg motorcycle because of the confidence it gave me and how easy it was to control. Nowadays, big ADVs surely do have that appeal because of their do-it-all nature. So, the 900 Rally Pro makes a good case for itself with a similar price tag and a better list of equipment.
