Kawasaki ER-6n: First Review

We take a close look at the ER-6n, the latest performance motorcycle to be launched in the Indian two-wheeler market by Kawasaki

Not too long ago Kawasaki was present in the Indian two-wheeler market with only two offerings, the Kawasaki Ninja 250 and the Kawasaki Ninja 650. But in the past one year, the Japanese two-wheeler giant has been on an offensive and launched a plethora of products in a short period of time. The latest entrant in the Indian market is the Kawasaki ER-6n that was launched recently alongwith the Kawasaki Z250. We take a close look at the new offering from the Japanese bikemaker. 

The Kawasaki ER-6n is essentially the streetbike version of the popular sports touring offering – the Kawasaki Ninja 650. The styling follows the basic streetfighter design ethos of a mass forward design language. The chiselled fuel tank, exposed tubes of the chassis and the spring finished in a contrast of red give the bike an aggressive stance. The sharp and petite headlamp somehow doesn’t gel with the overall design of the bike. The exposed radiator with the tank shrouds on each corner with the huge motor does enhance the visual appeal of the Kawasaki ER-6N.

Since it’s the naked version of the Kawasaki Ninja 650, the tail section, split seats and underbelly exhaust muffler and wheels remain unchanged. The overall design is good but the Kawasaki ER-6N will be only offered in black shade that conceals thee creases on the bike and a more vibrant colour would have been better appreciated. Also the riding posture of the Kawasaki ER-6n has been altered to better suit its streetbike dynamics.

Powering the Kawasaki ER-6n is the same motor as seen on the Kawasaki Ninja 650. The 649cc, twin-cylinder, liquid-cooled mill churns out 72PS of peak power at 8,500rpm. The powerplant is mated to a six-speed transmission. Although the power figures aren’t something that would make your jaws drop given that it is an entry-level performance bike the numbers are decent. And according to Kawasaki their main focus was to provide more low-mid range torque for in everyday riding conditions or on the open highways.

The Kawasaki ER-6n employs a tubular diamond type frame crafted from high-tensile steel which is supported by 41mm telescopic front forks and preload adjustable offset laydown single-shock at rear. Braking responsibilities are taken care of by dual semi-floating 300 mm petal discs at front and single 220 mm petal disc at the back. The Kawasaki ER-6n has a fuel tank capacity of 16 litres and it tips the scale at 204kg. The bike runs on 120 section front tyre at front and meaty 160 section tyre at the back.

The Kawasaki ER-6n has been launched at Rs 4.78 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). For that pricing, it currently doesn’t have any competition in our two-wheeler spectrum and the only bike that comes close to it in terms of pricing is the Harley-Davidson Street 750. The Kawasaki ER-6n is a great motorcycle, for a consumer who wants a no nonsense performance streetbike with ample performance and doesn’t cost a fortune. But it will soon find a rival in the Benelli TNT600 i, scheduled to be launched soon with an aggressive price tag and an in-line-four powerplant.
