Your escapades aboard the new Jeep Grand Cherokee are set to become cleaner, thanks to the introduction of a new plug-in hybrid variant. The fifth-gen SUV is India-bound, and it’s arriving here in 2022. So, without further ado, let’s get cracking on these five things you want to know about it:
Don’t Confuse This For The Grand Cherokee L
They aren’t the same. The larger Grand Cherokee L, unveiled earlier this year, is a seven-seater, while the upcoming model is a five-seater. And while both have similar design touches, the Grand Cherokee is a tad smaller than the Grand Cherokee L.

There’s A New Plug-in Hybrid
The Grand Cherokee gets V6 and V8 powertrain options. But the highlight is the new 2-litre plug-in hybrid that pairs the petrol engine with two electric motors. Jeep claims the eco-friendly unit can go 40km on pure electric power.
Here are the detailed specifications of all three powertrains:

Trailhawk Baby!
In typical Jeep fashion, the Grand Cherokee is available in the off-road-focused Trailhawk variant, which gets some upgrades over the standard model. These include:
Increased ride height with a liftable air suspension.
18-inch wheels with chunky all-terrain tyres.
The sway bar can be disconnected for better articulation and traction.
Can be opted with the hybrid powertrain.
Plenty of red hooks and exterior elements (blue in case of hybrid).
A rear electronic limited-slip differential (exclusive to the hybrid).
Selec-Speed control to manage vehicle speed without the throttle input while off-roading in 4LOW.
Exterior and Interior Design
The styling of the new Grand Cherokee is more evolutionary than revolutionary. There are all the familiar elements that we come to expect from a Jeep -- the seven-slat grille, a butch upright stance, and squared-out wheel arches. The new additions include sleek LED headlamps and tail lamps, and these infuse a sense of modernity to the Grand Cherokee.
The interior is a straight lift from the new Grand Cherokee L, which means you get a neat and straightforward dashboard with high-quality wood, leather, and metal trims. There’s also a seperate screen for the co-driver à la Ferrari.
India Launch
Jeep has confirmed that the Grand Cherokee will be brought to India as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit. It remains to be seen whether it’s the 5-seater or the 7-seater model, but we reckon it will be the former.
At an expected price of Rs 75 lakh (ex-showroom), the SUV will be an alternative to the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5, and the upcoming facelifted Audi Q7.
