The buzz around Kia’s entry-level EV offering for India reached a crescendo with the global premiere of the Kia Syros in India. With plans to launch the Syros EV in 2026, the South Korean automaker is targeting the ever-growing electric vehicle market in India with a sub-Rs 15 lakh price point. This might put the upcoming Syros EV in contention with the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400, which are popular in this space.
Here’s what we know so far.
The Kia Syros EV is likely to utilize the same reinforced Hyundai-Kia K1 platform that underpins the ICE version of this car. It must be noted that the Hyundai Inster EV, which is already on sale in South Korea, is also based on this architecture. This platform is optimized for compact electric vehicles and is expected to bring a high degree of localization to make the Syros EV competitively priced.
The Hyundai Inster EV, based on the same platform, features two battery options: a 42 kWh and a 49 kWh pack, offering a WLTP-claimed real-world range of up to 355 km on the bigger battery. The Syros EV is likely to inherit a similar configuration, which will also put it on par with rivals such as the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400.
Kia aims to bring the Syros EV to Indian roads in 2026. Positioned as an entry-level EV, it could be the most affordable electric SUV in Kia’s India portfolio, sitting below the Carens EV, which is also in the pipeline for the year 2025.
With Hyundai’s Creta EV launching in early 2025, followed by the Carens EV, the Syros EV will face stiff competition from its sibling brands as well as rivals like the Tata Punch EV, Tata Nexon EV and the Mahindra XUV 400.
The Kia Syros EV is expected to retain several standout features from its ICE counterpart, ensuring a premium and tech-forward experience. Notable features likely to carry over include a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an 8-speaker Harman / Kardon sound system, and a range of advanced safety features such as 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines.
The Syros EV may also include comfort-focused additions like a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, and Type-C USB chargers. Additionally, expect advanced techs like Level-2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera, and wireless phone charging to be part of the package, enhancing both convenience and safety.
The Kia Syros EV could be a game-changer for the Indian EV market, which could be priced competitively, offering a feature-packed electric SUV under Rs 15 lakh. With a localized production model, competitive range, and strong brand backing, it could emerge as a favourite among EV buyers.
Will Kia’s first affordable EV for India set new benchmarks in the budget electric car segment? We’ll know when it hits the market in 2026.
