The hypercar shamer has been chugging along since 2007, but it seems to be on its last legs

The R35-generation Nissan GT-R, aka the Godzilla, has been making hypercars sweat since it showed up in 2007. And it kept chugging along, with the 2022 edition being introduced in September 2021. But now, it looks like this generation is coming towards the end of its life-cycle as sales for the speed demon have been closed at its home market in Japan. The reason for that is “the number of orders has reached the planned sales volume” according to the Japanese website.

For the 2022 model year, Nissan had introduced the GT-R T-spec, which came with slightly wider fenders, gold-finished forged alloy wheels, carbon fibre rear-wing as well as featured bits from the hardcore GT-R Nismo such as carbon ceramic brakes, and air ducts.

Under the hood it came with a hand-built 565PS 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 motor, paired to a 6-speed DCT paddle-shift gearbox and an all-wheel drivetrain. The Nismo upped the ante to 600PS of grunt and could do sub-3 second 0-100kmph sprint times. Of course power isn’t everything, as it came with an aggressive aero kit that includes a large rear wing to pile on downforce and keep the Godzilla even further glued to the tarmac.

So with the GT-R now off the shelves from its home market, what’s next for the R35-generation Godzilla? Well things seem to point towards a next-gen model since the 2022 GT-R T-spec was quite a rare offering, with only 100 units being produced. In fact it's no longer on sale in the European and Australian markets as well which seems to indicate that it is the end of the current-gen GT-R.

As things stand, there’s no word on whether the Godzilla will soldier on in its current iteration for a 16th year or get a new iteration. Fingers crossed we get some indication in the near future about the fate of the JDM icon.
