Yamaha has unveiled the 2025 Yamaha R9 and the 2025 Yamaha R3 globally. The R9 is a new supersport offering from the Japanese manufacturer, powered by the same engine as the Yamaha MT-09 and the 2025 Yamaha R3 has undergone a few much needed updates. Here’s everything you need to know.
The Yamaha R9 is a new supersport offering, and gets the same engine as the Yamaha MT-09. The bike features a typical sharp and aggressive design that we have come to expect from the Japanese manufacturer. What makes this bike stand out is the unique fairing mounted winglets, which look really nice. The bike is offered in 2 colours: Icon Blue and Tech Black.
As mentioned above, the bike is powered by the same engine as the Yamaha MT-09, which is an 890cc liquid-cooled inline-three motor which outputs 119.0PS at 10,000rpm and 93Nm at 7,000rpm. Other than the engine, the Yamaha R9 doesn’t have any other similarities with the Yamaha MT-09.
The bike is built on a perimeter frame and its suspension setup consists of a 43mm KYB inverted fork and a KYB monoshock. The inverted fork offers compression, preload and rebound damping. The KYB monoshock offers full adjustability and Yamaha has used a remote preload adjuster here. Braking duties are handled by a twin 340mm disc setup at front and a 220mm disc at the rear, with Brembo Stylema callipers.
The R9 gets a colour TFT display, which has readouts for speed and engine rpm, and has an odometer and trip meter. The R9 has a 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU), and electronic riding aids such as traction control system with 3-levels, 3-mode wheelie control and ABS modes. Overall, the R9 looks like a really good bike with good performance on offer and a decent set of features.
The Yamaha R3 this year has undergone a couple of much needed design changes, mechanical updates and also the addition of a couple of important features. Coming to the mechanical changes, the R3 has now finally got a slip-and-assist clutch, something which we wished the bike had gotten earlier.
Other than this, the bike has now received a revamped instrument console. The console is a LCD unit, with a negatively-lit display. The new display looks quite good and has a really clean layout. It also looks and feels a lot more premium when compared to the console that is currently offered on the outgoing Yamaha R3. Features Wise, the console offers smartphone connectivity via the Yamaha Y-Connect App. It offers call, SMS and even email alerts.
Talking about styling changes, the bike now gets a new LED DRL setup with twin LED and a single projector headlight, which looks quite good compared to the current setup that the outgoing R3 is running. Along with these changes, the bike now also comes with full LED lighting.
Other than these changes, the bike’s performance and underpinnings remain the same. It is still powered by the same 321cc, liquid-cooled, parallel twin engine which outputs 42PS and 29.5Nm.
While we are quite excited that Yamaha has unveiled the R9, but the bike is unlikely to come to India anytime soon. Nonetheless, this is quite an interesting development and we hope Yamaha does bring it to India in the future. If you’re someone who wants to experience the performance the 890cc inline triple has to offer, then you can look forward to the Yamaha MT-09 which could be launched in India in December 2024. The bike could come at a price of Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom).
The updates to the Yamaha R3 is what we are most excited about. The current R3 is not exactly an attractive deal right now, given the lack of features. The bike’s looks have become a bit dated now so this update is a welcome surprise. With these updates, the bike is now a more attractive proposition and hopefully will be coming to India some time next year.
