The W214 E-Class is sleeker, more aerodynamic and cutting-edge, but remembers its roots with its grille

Mercedes has unveiled a new generation of its quintessential luxury sedan, the E-Class. It’s now in its sixth generation (W214) and gets an all-new bodywork; minimalist, more opulent and tech-laden interiors; and efficient powertrains.

The E-Class is one of Mercedes’ most popular models around the world and in India. Here are five cool facts about the latest Merc sedan:

All-new styling remains familiar

The new E-Class looks familiar, but gets a smoother, more aerodynamic bodywork and a 22mm longer wheelbase. At the front, the radiator grille is larger and gets a more traditional design, but on the opposite end , it has gloss black surrounds that blend into the headlights, reminiscent of the “black panel” or covered front grille of Mercedes’ electric vehicles such as the EQS.

In profile, the wide, low-slung stance makes the silhouette familiar. But the shoulder line is sharply creased at the front and rear and completely smooth in the centre, where the front doors are placed. The sedan now gets flush-fitting door handles from the S-Class, and new alloy wheels.

At the rear, the new E-Class gets split taillights with new, triangular LED elements in a tri-arrow pattern and a full-width chrome strip above the number plate holder, similar to the S-Class. Other than that, the sedan also gets rear-wheel steering for the first time. Overall, a very evolutionary exterior design change.

Minimalist, groundbreaking interior design

What’s more than just evolutionary in the new E-Class is its interior, which instantly feels like it’s from the future. The dashboard has a minimalist design that seems EQS-inspired, with narrow AC vents and a massive MBUX Superscreen. It’s very similar to the Hyperscreen you get in Merc’s EV offerings, but here the digital driver’s display is a separate floating unit.

The ambient lighting makes an arc around the dashboard, extending into the doors and the underside of the dashboard. Mercedes will also offer a wide array of interior upholstery, colour and trim options to personalise the sedan.

Luxury features and safety

The new E-Class gets the latest generation MBUX infotainment interface alongside a Burmester 4D sound system. It’ll offer four-zone climate control with electrically controlled front air vents, a smartphone-based digital car key, voice assistant and even routines for the AC and heating that will, in the future, be automatically created by an AI.

As for safety, the new E-Class has multiple airbags and some pre-collision safety systems such as Impulse Side that can move the front passengers sideways to reduce the impact of a side collision.

Of course, it also has driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control with stop and go (can be engaged at up to 210kmph), traffic junction assist, forward collision avoidance, lane assist and blind spot monitoring.

Array of electrified powertrains

The new W214 E-Class will solely be offered with electrified (mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid) powertrains. Mercedes has updated the powertrains with slightly higher combined outputs courtesy of a higher electric boost of 23PS. The standard petrol and diesel variants will all get 2-litre, four-cylinder engines, but the top-spec E-Class will come with an electrified version of Merc’s six-cylinder engine.

In India, the E-Class is currently offered in E 200 (197PS), E 220 d (194PS) and E 350 d (286PS) variants. In the new sedan, the E 200 petrol and E 220 d diesel variants are tuned for 204PS and 197PS, respectively.

Launch and India arrival

“India will have the LWB version of the New E-Class which will be introduced at a later stage, after the debut of the standard wheelbase. India is the only RHD market for the LWB E-Class, and the market debut is expected only around the second half of 2024.” – Mercedes Benz India

Mercedes will begin worldwide launches of the E-Class with Europe soon. However, only the standard wheelbase sedan has been unveiled for now, and the long-wheelbase (LWB) version, which will be offered in India, is only expected in the second half of 2024. It’ll be a replacement for the current E-Class that retails from Rs 75 lakh (ex-showroom). It’ll rekindle long-standing rivalries with the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6.
