BMW has commenced series production of the all-electric i4 at its Munich plant in Germany. An interesting fact is that the plant in which the i4 is being produced is more than 100 years old. The same facility also manufactures cars like the 3 Series (estate and sedan), the M3, and the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

The existing systems in the plant do help the manufacturing process, but minor changes were needed to support the manufacturing process of the electric sedan. The carmaker has increased the digitisation process to ensure the quality levels are maintained to typical BMW standards.

This includes 3D scanning, allowing the carmaker to collect digital data on both the build and vehicle’s systems. Not only does digitisation allow the carmaker to collect data, but also helps BMW virtually plan for the building system. A clear example of this is the i4’s axle pre-assembly, which was planned using the Omniverse Nucleus platform by NVIDIA.

BMW is also planning to make its Munich plant sustainable by adapting reverse osmosis to reduce water consumption by six million litres. It also aims to cut down pollution of its logistics to zero emissions as well.

The i4 is BMW’s first all-electric sedan to go on sale globally. It’s offered in a standard eDrive40 and a performance-oriented M50i trim with quite impressive acceleration times. BMW also says the i4 retains its fun-to-drive characteristics from the 4 Series it is based on, despite the sedan going all electric. You can read about the all-electric i4 here

In India, the Mini Cooper SE will be the first all-electric model from the BMW Group to go on sale. Know more about it by clicking here.
