BMW’s X4 SUV-coupe has made a comeback in India and how! After being chucked from the lineup earlier this year, the German marque hasn’t just merely brought it back. Instead, the folks at Bavaria, have launched the more aggressive, sportier X4 M40i iteration, priced at Rs 96.20 lakh (ex-showroom). It joins the X3 M40i and 3 series M340i in BMW’s lineup of sportier variants.
BMW X4 M40i Design
As is with all the M performance variants, BMW has made the standard X4 sportier and more aggressive by adding M-specific parts. They include a blacked-out grille, glossy black skid plates and ORVMs and new sportier alloy wheels. The twin L-shaped LED DRL signature within the slim headlights along with the horizontal LED tailights have been retained as it is.
And while the sloping roofline of the standard X4 already made it rather snazzy, the minor cosmetic tweaks of the M40i have had a significant impact in upping its athletic quotient.

Although the overall layout and flow of the dashboard is the same, BMW has made slight tweaks here as well, to reiterate the fact that you’re not in a standard X4. As a result, you get a carbon fibre trim with M specific seat belts complemented by sports seat.
Two screens, including a 12.3-inch infotainment system for the passenger and a 12.3-inch driver’s display for the driver, take care of all the entertainment and information needs of the occupants inside. Features like three zone climate control, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car technology, heads up display, and a panoramic sunroof further take care of the comfort of the passengers.
The safety kit includes multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control and a 360-degree camera.
BMW X4 M40i Mechanicals
This is where the crux of the revisions lies. For starters, it now uses a more powerful 360PS/500m 3-litre twin turbo six cylinder engine propelling the SUV-coupe to a top speed of up to 250kmph. Despite its 2 tone curb weight, it takes just 4.9 seconds to clock a 0-100kmph time. It uses an 8-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels and can also be controlled manually by the paddle shifters offered behind the wheel.
To match its straight line go in the corners, BMW has worked its magic on the mechanicals of the X4. The steering rack has been revised for quicker turn ins, the suspension is adaptive and can be tweaked for a softer or stiffer setting as and when required, while the M Sport differential constantly works out to deliver power to the wheels with more traction. Oh, and lest we forget, it also gets bigger brakes, because you’ll be needing them.

The BMW X4 M40i is a rather unique proposition in the Indian market. SUV-coupes are a niche here, be it in the mass market or even the luxury segment. The X4 M40i takes that niche and makes it even niche-er with all its performance on tap. The only rival for BMW’s SUV-coupe comes in the form of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz AMG Coupe and the Porsche Macan.
