With the launch of the Basalt, Citroen aims to strengthen its presence in India by introducing an unique SUV coupe offering in a market dominated by SUVs. However, with a price tag of Rs 7.99 lakh to Rs 13.62 lakh (ex-showroom), its introductory pricing falls into the same bracket as the C3 Aircross, making for a tempting familial feud comparison. But fret not, we are here to simplify things for you and help you decide which Citroen you should pick by highlighting the positives and negatives of both models.

Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 13.56 lakh |
The entry-level Basalt is much more affordable than the C3 Aircross as the SUV-coupe gets a naturally aspirated petrol engine. However, that gap narrows down significantly when you compare them vis-a-vis top-spec variants. Also, for an additional Rs 20,000, you can spec either of the Citroen SUV with a dual-tone exterior shade. Additionally, if you choose the C3 Aircross, you also have an option to configure it with a 7-seat layout.

Built on a similar platform, the Basalt is 29 mm longer than the C3 Aircross. However, it is narrower by 31 mm and shorter in height by up to 76 mm than the C3 Aircross, reflecting the Basalt's sportier design. Also, the C3 Aircross has a 20 mm longer wheelbase than the Basalt.
Visually, both the Basalt and C3 Aircross feature a split headlight setup with LED DRLs and headlights with chrome inserts along the grille. That said, the bumper design has been tweaked in both cars to give them their unique identity. Things change when you view their silhouettes, where the Basalt boasts a sloping roofline, while the C3 Aircross has a boxy design. Additionally, both the SUVs have distinct alloy-wheel designs, with the C3 Aircross featuring 17-inch wheels compared to the Basalt’s 16-inch wheels.

Shifting focus to the rear, the Basalt’s SUV coupe body style is more pronounced with a more upright stance, while the C3 Aircross appears more muscular. Both models feature halogen tail lamps and a chunky bumper that enhances their ruggedness.

Except for the automatic climate control system and a wireless phone charger, the Basalt and the C3 Aircross are equipped with a similar feature set, with the Basalt including these additional niceties. It also gets upgraded safety with six airbags, while both models feature standard safety along with a reverse parking camera, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
That said, it must be noted that Citroen will soon update the C3 Aircross with features such as LED projector headlights, six airbags and an automatic climate control unit. The updated model was showcased during the Basalt unveiling event and is expected to be introduced shortly.

While both the C3 Aircross and Basalt are available with a 110 PS 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine choice, the latter is also offered with an 82 PS 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. However, the naturally aspirated engine is available only with a 5-speed manual transmission and is limited to the lower-spec variants. The turbocharged engine, on the other hand, offers a choice between a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
The winner of this comparison will depend primarily on your preferred body style and whether you need a three-row seat layout.
If you’re considering the C3 Aircross’ 5-seater variant, we think the Basalt might be a better choice with its sportier styling, additional amenities, and an extra engine choice. The rear seat comfort in the Basalt is also much better than the C3 Aircross, primarily due to the fact that you can adjust the underthigh support.
However, if a 7-seat layout is your main priority, the C3 Aircross is your only option between the two. While it lacks some of the additional features offered by the Basalt, it provides practical benefits, including more boot space and a set of removable seats in case you do not need them. If you can wait for some more time, we would suggest you pick up the soon-to-be-launched updated C3 Aircross with more features.
