The Maruti Fronx is the latest SUV, alongside the five-door Jimny, to be introduced to the carmaker’s NEXA model lineup and Maruti wasted no time in opening the order books for both SUVs. So, we reckon their market launch could well be on the horizon.
So, if you’re in the queue to book the Fronx, this article is for you, because we detail everything there is to know about the SUV in 10 images:
First and foremost, yes, this does look like a shrunken Grand Vitara, but it's essentially a beefed up Baleno hatchback. The front is laden with similarities to the Grand Vitara with a similar split headlight setup, huge grille, and a chrome strip on the grille.
It gets its own identity though thanks to the sloping roofline, which gives it a crossover-esque vibe. The wheel arches are chunky and the alloys look funky.

The rear also sports a similar design to the bigger Maruti with a familiar connected taillight (with different design elements inside) spanning the boot lid and greyish cladding on the rear bumper.
Step inside and you’ll notice that the cabin too is very familiar. But this time around, it resembles the Baleno’s cabin with a similardashboard design and layout.
The nine-inch floating screen makes its presence known as it sits bang in the middle of the dashboard, with AC vents and the central console below borrowed directly from the Baleno.
Apart from the addition of wireless phone charging, the Fronx borrows the Baleno’s features list as is. That means it packs wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, heads-up display, cruise control, a 360-degree camera and auto AC. On the safety front, it packs six airbags, ABS with EBD, hill-hold assist and electronic stability program. That said, lack of a sunroof is a miss.
You can spec the SUV in a total of six monotone hues: NEXA Blue, Grandeur Grey, Arctic White, Earthen Brown, Opulent Red and Splendid Silver. Dual tone colour options include Earthen Brown, Opulent Red and Splendid Silver with Bluish Black shade for the roof.
The 1-litre Boosterjet petrol engine has been revived for the Fronx. However, the turbo-petrol unit is now assisted by a mild-hybrid system. Rated at 100PS and 148Nm with a five-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmission (with paddle shifters), we reckon this thing will be no slouch.
And if you don’t want the fast and furious antics, there’s also the Baleno’s standard 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit with the five-speed manual and AMT transmissions.
Launch timeline for the SUV isn’t confirmed yet but bookings are already underway so the car’s market entry shouldn't be far away. We expect Maruti to price it from around Rs 8 lakh (ex-showroom), which will put it in competition with the likes of the Nissan Magnite, Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Honda WR-V, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300 and the Renault Kiger.
