If you’re someone who is in a family of four people and looking for a comfortable as well as practical small car, one should consider the Hyundai Exter. That’s because there are more than a handful of reasons why we at ZigWheels are recommending it. So without wasting any of your time, we are cutting to the chase and explaining to you why it should be on one's radar while looking out for a new car for their family.
The Hyundai Exter’s dimensions aren't massive and that makes it a very easy car to drive in town, especially if you live in a town with choc-a-block traffic.

The excellent visibility outside the large glass area and the light controls means one would be at ease when driving behind the wheel. In fact, so much at ease that it’s perfect as a beginner’s car as there is less blind spot and you have excellent visibility. So squeezing into tight spots in bumper to bumper traffic or a parking lot would be a breeze in the Exter.
And you might be thinking, it’s small. The cabin space would be tight. Well, we address that in the next point.
Despite being a small car, the Exter’s cabin can accommodate two six footers sitting back to back in the cabin. The rear seat offers more than enough legroom, making it perfect if you’re a chauffeur driven owner. Then there’s the seatbase in itself, which offers satisfactory underthigh and lateral support.
Combine that with a nice recline angle, the Exter’s rear seat makes it perfect for a place to relax. The large glass area means one wouldn’t feel claustrophobic while spending time here.

All of this comes without the expense of boot space. The Exter’s 391-litre boot can occupy a big trolley, cabin-sized suitcase, two soft bags and space for more. It’s small loading lip also means lifting heavy luggage won’t be a hassle. Plus, if you opt for the CNG variant, you don’t have to compromise on boot space, courtesy of the twin-cylinder layout.
The Exter’s 1.2-litre petrol engine, which puts out 83 PS and 114 Nm, gets the job done for most scenarios. For starters, the engine is refined and less intrusive inside the cabin, which means one doesn’t have to talk louder than usual when having a conversation inside the car.
The engine is responsive in town and one doesn’t have to work it hard to get a move on when driving through traffic. Adding to the convenience factor here is the fact that the 5-speed manual and clutch are light, which makes it effortless. Want more convenience? Then one should consider the 5-speed AMT which also gets paddle shifters if you intend to take manual control.
Out on the open road, the Exter offers satisfactory performance and has enough poke even when driving it with a full load of passengers. All of this doesn’t come at the expense of fuel economy. The Exter manual returns a claimed 19.4 kmpl, while the AMT delivers 19.2 kmpl. And if you opt for the CNG version, it returns 27.1 km/kg.
Features are an important factor when it comes to buying a new car and the Exter doesn’t disappoint any bit here.
Highlights include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected car tech, automatic climate control, a wireless phone charger, a single-pane sunroof, keyless entry with push button start, cruise control and steering mounted audio controls.
As for passenger safety – six airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors are offered as standard. In addition to that, the Exter also gets electronic stability control, a tyre pressure monitoring system and a dash camera to give an added layer of protection to occupants.
SUVs are becoming the de facto choice for most new car buyers and the Exter, with its SUV-like styling, does pull people. The front-end has a bit of Hyundai’s flagship, Palisade, going on with its H-shaped DRLs and square-shaped projector headlights lower down in the grille. Chunks of body cladding around the car give it a nice rugged look and adding to the SUV-like vibe can be seen its upright styling and sharp lines.
Attention to detail can be seen in the rear-end where the Exter gets tail lamps with the ‘H’ insignia that mimic the DRLs.
Considering all these factors, the Hyundai Exter clearly satisfies all criterias for those looking for a city car for a small family. Prices for Hyundai’s micro SUV ranges from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10.43 lakh (ex-showroom).
