Lexus has thrown its hat into the ring for Auto Expo 2023, where it’ll unveil the fifth-generation RX SUV and likely showcase its first electric SUV, the RZ 450e.
Here’s what you can expect from the SUVs:
The new Lexus RX looks sleek and premium with its rounded design and sculpted body lines. Lexus says it’ll be offered in two variants – likely the 450h+ and 350h trim levels, since the current RX is offered in 450hL trim. The 350h is a self-charging hybrid, while the 450h+ is a plug-in hybrid SUV that can go for up to 64km on EV power alone.
On the inside, the RX has a redesigned, minimalist cabin with a 14-inch touchscreen, three-zone climate control, heads-up display (HUD) and powered and ventilated seats. It should also get the latest Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 suite of driver-assistance tech that includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian detection and autonomous parking.
The fifth-gen SUV should be priced at a premium over the existing SUV that costs Rs 1.11 crore; but its lower-spec trim level, if introduced, should bring down the entry-level price.
Based on the e-TNGA platform shared with the Toyota bZ4X, the RZ 450e is an all-wheel drive e-SUV with a 312PS drivetrain. It has a 71.4kWh battery that’s estimated to offer a range of up to 400km and can be charged to 80 per cent in just 25 minutes using a 150kW fast charger.
It’s made from environmentally conscious materials and gets advanced technologies such as steer-by-wire and an e-latch that doesn’t let you open the door if a vehicle or motorcyclist is approaching in your blind spot.
We’ll know the launch and delivery timelines and variant details of the SUVs upon their unveiling at the 2023 Auto Expo. The Lexus RX will rival the Mercedes GLE, BMW X5, Volvo XC90 and Audi Q7, while the RZ will go up against the BMW iX, Mercedes EQC and Jaguar I-Pace EVs.
