We could have more variants; the current CBU model is only available in a fully loaded Launch Edition.
Notable features include lounge-like rear seats, adaptive ambient lighting, a Burmester 4D sound system, and a 12.8-inch MBUX touchscreen infotainment system.
It is provided with 3-litre petrol and diesel engines, with a 9-speed automatic and an all-wheel drivetrain.
Will continue to rival the Audi A8L and BMW 7 Series.
The 2021 Mercedes S-Class, launched in India as a CBU in June this year, is the carmaker’s benchmark for opulence. Now, the ultra-luxurious flagship sedan will be easier on your pocket as the locally assembled model is launching on October 7, just a few days from now.
Currently, the sedan is available in a fully loaded Launch Edition from Rs 2.17 crore to Rs 2.19 crore (ex-showroom). It is offered in S450 (petrol) and S400D (diesel) versions. The design is premium, including elements like the three-pointed star on the hood, a chrome-laden front grille with LED headlamps, smooth character lines, flush-fitting door handles, and 20-inch alloy wheels.
Considering the sedan is luxury personified, rear-seat passengers get plenty of attention. Highlights include lounge-like twin seats (with ventilation, heating, and massage functions), soft pillows, and a neck warmer. Other features include two entertainment screens and a ‘Boss’ mode (whereby the rear seats recline and the front seat slides forward for comfortable seating) for the one seated behind the co-driver.
All these creature comforts can be controlled via a 7-inch tablet in the rear centre console.

At the front, you get a 12.8-inch MBUX touchscreen infotainment system with facial recognition or fingerprint access, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, a Burmester 4D sound system, and ambient lighting, which changes colours while adjusting the temperature or activating the indicators. Other amenities include two wireless phone chargers, connected car tech, a panoramic sunroof, and powered front seats with massage function.
Keeping passengers safe are 10 airbags, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, electronic stability control, and tyre pressure monitoring.
The 2021 S-Class is powered by 3-litre petrol and diesel engines, with the former getting an optional mild-hybrid setup. Both are paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drivetrain. There’s also the rear-axle steering for better cornering and an air suspension for that cushy ride.

Now that the Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be a locally assembled model, the specifications could change and there could be more variants on offer. This will only help the S-Class in its rivalry with the Audi A8L and the BMW 7 Series.
