Maruti Fronx vs Brezza Fuel Economy Comparo: SUVs Rekindle The NA vs Turbo Debate

The Brezza has the bigger engine, but Maruti’s Boosterjet is neck-and-neck with its performance and can be frugal, too
The wait is getting a bit long for the Maruti Fronx, whose launch is expected to be just around the corner. The subcompact crossover has us excited with its engine – it brings back the enthusiast-friendly Boosterjet turbo-petrol unit that we last saw in the Baleno RS. However, the Fronx will also have to fight for its market share with its own stablemate, the mighty, well-established Maruti Brezza.
For this comparison, we’ll take a look at the two SUVs’ on-paper specs to find out which of their engines is more frugal – the larger displacement, naturally aspirated (NA) engine or the novel Boosterjet unit.
Maruti SUVs' fuel economy compared
The Maruti Fronx is offered with two petrol engine options, a 1.2-litre NA engine and a 1-litre turbo-petrol engine. For this comparison, we’ve primarily considered the 1-litre engine as its performance is more closely matched with the Brezza’s larger engine.

The Brezza’s larger-displacement engine makes 3PS more power than the Fronx’s Boosterjet unit, but gets 11Nm less torque.

On paper, the fuel economy figures of the Brezza and Fronx Boosterjet are almost comparable, with the Fronx getting a slightly better claimed figure.

The Fronx and Brezza get identical gearbox options and both SUVs report slightly better figures with the standard manual transmission.

Meanwhile, the Fronx’s base engine isn’t as powerful as either of the other two engines, but gets the best fuel economy of the bunch.
Turbo-petrol vs NA engine efficiency
Although the Fronx’s turbo-petrol engine and the Brezza’s NA engine are closely matched on paper, the difference could be more prominent in real-world driving conditions. Turbo-petrol engines make most of their power at higher RPMs; however, in that zone the engine isn’t as fuel efficient.
ICE engines are most efficient under high-load, lower RPM conditions (eg. driving on the highway in top gear). Depending on the driving conditions and, indeed, driver behaviour, the economy figures mentioned above could be different from what you see on the Brezza or Fronx’s MID economy readout.
The Fronx and Brezza compete in a highly competitive segment populated by the Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300 and Tata Nexon among others.
