Retains the 4-litre bi-turbo V8 engine, paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission that distributes power to all four wheels.
Off-road enhancements include 350mm ground clearance, 910mm water wading capacity and a 45 degree attack angle.
Exteriors get carbon fibre inserts, additional LED lighting, 22-inch alloy wheels, as well as a Green Hell Magno body shade.
Cabin receives Nappa leather, carbon fibre trim, and a startup screen animation.
There’s no denying that if you want a true silver arrow for rough terrains, then the Mercedes-Benz G-Class or the ‘G-Wagen’ fits that bill. But what if that off-road prowess was taken up a notch? Well that’s what Mercedes-AMG has silently done, and in comes the Mercedes-AMG G63 4x4².
What stays the same though is its powertrain setup, which comprises a 4.0-litre bi-turbo AMG V8 engine that pushes 585PS and 850Nm, and is paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission. All that grunt is sent to all four wheels.
Let’s get to the real meaty bits about the AMG G63 4x4², and that’s the upgrades it's gotten to make it better capable of tackling rough terrains. We can safely say that the carmaker has knocked it out of the park here, as you can immediately tell the SUV sits obscenely higher than before. That’s thanks to an all-new suspension and axle setup to give it 351mm ground clearance which is a good 113mm bump up over the standard G Class. Elsewhere, the attack angle has been increased to 45 degrees while the water-wading depth is up to 910mm.
While this special G-Wagen doesn’t look too dissimilar to its standard counterparts, it gets its own identity thanks to it being specced in the Green Hell Magno shade which honours the legendary Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit. Other notable bits include special 22-inch wheels, additional LED lighting on the roof, and carbon fibre splashes on various areas including the wheel arches to the spare wheel cover.
Despite it being an off-road-focused SUV, there is enough civility inside, helped by twin 12.3-inch displays that comprise the digital driver’s display and a touchscreen infotainment system. The G63 4x4² gets Nappa leather seats, a startup screen animation just for this SUV, carbon fibre trims, and a digital IRVM.
While no pricing has been announced for the Mercedes-AMG G63 4x4², it certainly won’t be cheap. That’s not all for the G-Class, as it’ll get an all-electric equivalent by 2024 which will be built on a ladder-frame chassis, with independent motors at each of its four wheels.
