The current setup in the S-Class is a Burmester 4D sound system.
Dolby claims that Atmos can deliver better clarity and depth to music, and adapt to any playback format.
The S-Class and Mercedes-Maybach will get this audio technology by mid-2022.
Other models featuring the latest MBUX system will get it later.
The experience of being seated in a luxury offering can’t be fulfilled without having comfortable seating, premium tech, and of course a serene audio experience. Well, Mercedes-Benz is looking to enhance the audio experience by introducing Dolby Atmos to its flagship models which include the Mercedes-Maybach and the S-Class sedan.
This is not to say Merc’s current audio setup doesn’t offer enough. The S-Class comes equipped with a Burmester 4D sound system that comprises 31 speakers, 2 amplifiers and 8 sound exciters (two per seat). All this is capable of a whopping 1750 watts of power. The addition of Dolby Atmos will simply enhance that premium audio experience.
Dolby claims this audio tech adds more depth and clarity to music, and can adapt to any playback format. In fact, they even claim it reproduces the original studio-like audio.
The carmaker will roll out Dolby Atmos on the Mercedes-Maybach first in the middle of 2022, followed by the S-Class shortly after. Other models that have the latest MBUX software will also eventually get the premium audio technology.
The S-Class has recently gone local in India, and is now priced between Rs 1.57 crore and Rs 1.62 crore (ex-showroom, India). Expect the carmaker to add Dolby Atmos to the India-spec model shortly after the Euro-spec model gets it. This will likely lead to a price hike for the S-Class, which takes on the Audi A8L and BMW 7 Series.
