The new MG Astor has been unveiled globally (called the MG ZS in international markets). It could be introduced in India as a facelift, considering the model here didn’t get any major updates since its launch in 2021. The updated compact SUV sports a revamped design inside and out and gets a new hybrid powertrain. Let’s take a look at what the new additions are:
The new MG Astor gets a redesigned fascia featuring a new grille which is positioned lower and the MG logo now takes position on the hood. The headlights look sleeker now and get a new signature for the LED DRLs. The bumper has been tweaked as well with C-shaped air dams and there is a silver skid plate to round off the front look.
In profile, it gets a new set of alloy wheel and silver accents in the lower parts of the door. Apart from that, there are no major changes made to the side profile..
The rear gets redesigned LED tail lamps, a new tailgate and a new bumper. The number plate’s position has been shifted from the bumper to the tailgate and the lower part of the bumper now looks chunkier than before.
The dashboard layout remains familiar, but the lines are now sharper and you can even see the new design for the AC vents, a larger 12.3-inch infotainment system and changes to the lower centre console as well. The interior gets a darker colour theme now and also features a new design for the steering wheel with flattened top and bottom.
In terms of features, it gets the above mentioned 12.3-inch infotainment system which will support wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, keyless entry, and a six-way electrically adjustable driver's seat. In terms of safety, it gets six airbags, 360-degree camera, rain-sensing wipers and level-2 ADAS features.
Additionally, India-spec model is expected to get 6 airbags as standard, a panoramic sunroof, a wireless phone charger, ventilated front seats, and multi-colour ambient lighting.
Globally, MG has revealed the new Astor (ZS) gets a strong hybrid powertrain which consists of a 1.5-litre petrol engine that churns out 102 PS, paired to a 136 PS/ 250 Nm electric motor which together produce 196 PS and a whopping 465 Nm. According to MG, it will be able to go from 0-100 kmph in 8.7 seconds. There could be a chance where MG could introduce the same powertrain for the India version alongside the 1.3-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines.
The new MG Astor, if launched, will be priced at a premium over the current model, which is priced from Rs 9.98 lakh to Rs 18.07 lakh (ex-showroom). It will compete with compact SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun and Honda Elevate.
