The Overtrail variant gets nearly all the features of the top trims, exclusive paint and interior trim, and yet is priced lower than them

If you were looking for a Japanese luxury SUV for some light adventures but don’t really want to spend north of a crore on it, then Lexus has got just the thing for you. Meet the Lexus NX 350h Overtrail, which has just been launched in India at Rs 71.17 lakh (ex-showroom). It sits below the Luxury and F-sport trims, offers an exclusive exterior and interior theme along with certain tweaks that make it more compliant with adventurous lifestyles. Let’s take a look at what the new NX 350h Overtrail is all about:

Earthy tones

Given that this isn’t a facelift, there are no changes to the styling of the Lexus NX. What it does get is an exclusive use of Moon Desert hue, which is complemented by black elements all around – including on the ORVMs, roof rails and wheels. The alloys, now 18-inch units, have lost a couple of inches and are wrapped around special higher-profile tires. The ‘spindle grille’ also gets a matte black paint which contrasts well with the overall treatment of this variant.

The interior, too, gets a similar treatment with exclusive Geo Layer door trim which, as Lexus says, is inspired by the shades of nature. It replicates the shade of a tree branch and compliments the overall black theme of the cabin. In terms of features, the NX packs nearly everything that the other trims of the NX feature, including powered seats, digital displays, 17-speaker sound system, connected car tech, and ADAS features.

While having 195mm ground clearance is well and good in most cases, 20-inch alloys aren’t the most ideal size for mobility on rough roads. To make the NX more poised on broken tarmac, Lexus has offered the Overtrail with 18-inch alloys wrapped in higher-profile tyres. They help improve driving on rough roads and the Overtrail has also been given a higher minimum ground clearance for some peace of mind.

Propulsion duty is still carried out by a 2.5-litre petrol-hybrid engine with two electric motors. Total output stands at 244PS, which is delivered to all four wheels via a CVT (automatic transmission). The Overtrail borrows the adaptive variable suspension from the top-spec F Sport trim and is the only other variant in the NX’ lineup to get it.

So while it might not be Lexus GX-level capable, it will definitely be more comfortable on broken patches of roads.

While it might not be the epitome of an off-roader in any sense, the Overtrail does add a dash of capability in the NX' opulent and comfortable package. The Lexus NX continues to rival the likes of the  BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Audi Q5
